The right-handed pitcher Deivi García, a once-promising Yankees prospect, has been claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox, as reported by Erik Boland of Newsday on Thursday.

Who is Deivi García?

García, who had been designated for assignment by the Yankees earlier in the week, now finds himself with the White Sox. The Yankees made this move to clear space on their 40-man roster for the return of Jonathan Loáisiga, who was coming off the 60-day injured list.

Once hailed as one of baseball’s top pitching prospects, García’s career trajectory has taken an unexpected turn. Despite being ranked as high as No. 3 in the Yankees’ organization by MLB Pipeline in 2021, García struggled to live up to the high expectations set for him. This season, he made only two appearances for the Yankees, conceding just one run over 5 1/3 innings.

His performance in the minor leagues also left much to be desired. García posted a less-than-impressive 5.67 ERA in 28 outings (including one start) for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre this year.

Looking back, García did get some opportunities in the major leagues. In 2020, he made six starts, accumulating 34 1/3 innings and a 4.98 ERA. The following year, in 2021, he made two starts but struggled, surrendering six earned runs in just 8 1/3 innings.

The next chapter of García’s career remains uncertain as the White Sox consider how to utilize him. He has the possibility of being sent down to the minor leagues. It’s worth noting that the Tampa Bay Rays also submitted a claim for García.

The move to the White Sox comes at a time when the team has been embroiled in controversy. Former pitcher Keynan Middleton accused the White Sox of operating with “no rules,” making claims of rookies sleeping in the bullpen during games and players missing meetings without consequences. Middleton made these remarks following his trade to the Yankees.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn responded to these accusations, expressing irony in Middleton’s statements due to Middleton’s recent unprofessional behavior which he had apologized for.

In an intriguing turn of events, the White Sox managed to defeat the Yankees 9-2 in their recent series game.
