NEW YORK — It’s possible that the Yankees will send Ronald Guzman back to their Triple-A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
However, the Yankees were unable to keep him on the team because third baseman Josh Donaldson came off the paternity list just before the Yankees’ game on Saturday against the Rays at Yankee Stadium.
Therefore, the team decided to send the first baseman, who is 27 years old, out on assignment.
Guzman’s brief time with the Yankees was marked by a remarkable lack of production. He was hitless in all six of his at-bats, including a 0-for-5 performance in Wednesday’s game against the Twins, which they won 5-4.
On Saturday, Isiah Kiner-Falefa started at shortstop, Gleyber Torres played second base, and Marwin Gonzalez started at first base. This was possible because Donaldson had returned to the lineup.
In 90 games with the Yankees‘ Triple-A affiliate, Guzman had a batting average of .260, with 12 home runs, 39 RBI, and an OPS of .823.
Taken from the pregame notes of the Yankees:
HAWAIIAN PUNCH: INF Isiah Kiner-Falefa owns a seven-game hitting streak, batting .370/.414/.630 (10-for-27) with 5R, 1 double, 2HR, 6RBI, 2BB and 3SB in that span. Has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, batting .333/.385/.556 (12-for-36) with 6R, 2 doubles, 2HR, 6RBI, 3BB and 3SB in that span. Has multiple hits in three of his last five games. His 18SB are the most stolen bases by a Yankee in a single season since 2017 when Brett Gardner recorded 23SB and Jacoby Ellsbury recorded 22SB.
GETTING HIGGY WITH IT: C Kyle Higashioka recorded 3H on Friday vs. Tampa Bay, tying his career high (also 3H on 6/12/22 vs. Chicago-NL and 9/16/20 vs. Toronto)…also hit his eighth home run of the season with a solo HR in the ninth inning. Has hit .316 (6-for-19) with 1R, 1HR and 2RBI over his last six games. Has 8HR in his last 31 starts.
WHAT A RELIEF: Yankees relievers have not allowed a team earned run over their last 20.2 innings in their last five games. Their .209 opponents’ BA and 0.58 HR/9.0IP are the best in the Majors…also rank second in ERA (2.92) and fifth in WHIP (1.15).
