Despite some debated postseason choices, Aaron Boone appears likely to stay at the Yankees’ helm, with indications pointing to the team exercising his 2025 managerial option.

During Tuesday’s GM meetings, Brian Cashman voiced strong backing for Boone’s handling of the postseason, despite the Yankees’ eventual five-game World Series loss to the Dodgers. Cashman highlighted the challenging nature of managing in high-stakes games, where decisions are subject to either praise or critique. He reiterated Boone’s value to the organization, acknowledging that scrutiny is amplified during the playoffs.

“The manager’s job is so impossible that you can play the game of second-guessing because you are either going to make a move and it will be right or make a move and it will be wrong and then have at it, right?” the Yankees GM said. “I think he’s a really good manager. We’re lucky to have him, he’s done a great job. It’s a very hard job to do and it gets harder in the postseason, because whatever you do either works or it doesn’t and there is no gray area.”

Cashman addressed criticism surrounding Boone’s use of Nestor Cortes in the tenth inning of Game 1. Cortes, who hadn’t pitched in five weeks, issued an intentional walk to Mookie Betts before surrendering a walk-off grand slam to Freddie Freeman. Cashman defended Boone’s reasoning, explaining that Cortes was rostered for specific matchups, and emphasized that managerial choices are often judged strictly by their outcomes, rather than the rationale behind them.

Brian Cashman was asked about the decision to use Nestor Cortes in Game 1 of the 2024 World Series:

Expressing unwavering support, Cashman praised Boone’s overall approach during the playoffs as excellent, despite the unfortunate result with Cortes. He framed it as an unavoidable part of competitive baseball where calculated risks don’t always yield positive results.

Boone’s Yankees future secure

Regarding Boone’s future, Cashman mentioned that the team would discuss plans by the weekend, which could include exercising the manager’s option or even negotiating an extension. Cashman affirmed his strong personal endorsement of the Yankees skipper, adding that any final decisions would involve upper management input.

“I’m a big Aaron Boone fan,” the Yankees GM said. “Let’s go walk through the process and have the conversations that haven’t been had with the people above me.”

Before the Yankees’ 1-2 loss to the Cubs on Sunday afternoon, manager Aaron Boone addressed Nestor Cortes' frustrations about being shifted to a bullpen role.

At the GM meetings, Brian Cashman discussed Aaron Boone’s contract situation, stating that reviewing the 2025 option and exploring potential extensions are top priorities. He noted that these evaluations would begin within the next few days, utilizing the available timeframe.

When asked about the chances of picking up Boone’s option, Cashman took a measured stance, underscoring the importance of adhering to the organization’s procedures. He reaffirmed his strong support for the Yankees manager, praising his managerial skills and contributions, but emphasized that final decisions would only be made after consulting with upper management.

On the possibility of a longer-term extension, Cashman highlighted the need for step-by-step decision-making, pointing out that while all options would be considered, addressing Boone’s current contract status was the immediate focus. Throughout the discussion, he consistently conveyed high respect for his manager’s leadership.

Cashman mentioned that the deadline for exercising Boone’s option is about 10 days after the end of the World Series. He also noted that any adjustments to the coaching staff for the upcoming season would follow once the managerial contract situation is resolved.
