NEW YORK — The smile never faded. Not when the ankle shattered. Not when the doctors delivered the news. Not when the season slipped away.
Oswaldo Cabrera watched his Yankees teammates chase a championship from crutches and a scooter. He married his fiancee while wearing a walking boot. And as the calendar turned to 2026, the 26-year-old utility man finally revealed what carried him through the darkest stretch of his career.
His Instagram post on New Year’s Eve told a story that statistics never could.
Cabrera breaks his silence
The Yankees infielder penned a heartfelt message as 2025 came to a close. His words painted a picture of a man who endured far more than a fractured ankle.
“Definitely a year I’ll never forget,” Cabrera wrote. “So much happened, silent battles were won, and most importantly, I proved something to myself: always keeping my head up and a smile on my face. Because of that, today I can say I’m proud of myself.”
Those silent battles remained private. Cabrera did not elaborate. But his teammates and coaches know how difficult the past seven months have been for the Venezuelan native.
The injury that changed everything
Cabrera’s 2025 season ended in an instant. On May 12, he slid awkwardly into home plate against the Seattle Mariners. The left ankle gave way. He was carted off the field in an ambulance.
Doctors discovered more than a fracture during surgery. Ligament damage required additional repair. What started as a routine injury turned into a season-ending nightmare.
In 34 games before the injury, Cabrera hit .243 with one home run and 11 RBIs. He was competing for the everyday third base job when everything fell apart.
Manager Aaron Boone was blunt about the prognosis in May.
“I would say probably unlikely he returns this season,” Boone said at the time.
He never did return. The Yankees went on to reach the postseason without him.
Love carried him through
Cabrera’s message revealed what kept him going during the long rehabilitation process. It was not baseball. It was the people around him.
“I know my personality has attracted many good things, but the most valuable of all has been the people around me, those who love me, wish me the best, and make me feel supported,” he wrote. “That truly makes me happy.”
He saved special praise for his wife, Ari Gonzales. The couple married in July while Cabrera was still wearing a protective boot on his ankle. Photos from the ceremony showed him beaming despite the circumstances.
“2025 was a year of learning,” Cabrera continued. “A year that taught me to appreciate the small things in life and, without a doubt, brought me more love than ever, especially from my wife.”
The proposal that started it all
The love story gained attention back in March. Cabrera was mysteriously scratched from a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers. Fans feared an injury. Boone initially cited illness.
The truth emerged hours later. Cabrera had skipped the game to propose to Gonzales. She shared the moment on Instagram, and Yankees fans quickly forgave the deception.
Two months later, the ankle injury struck. Four months after that, Cabrera walked down the aisle in a boot. Through all of it, Gonzales stayed by his side.
“She’s my motivation,” he told reporters during a rehab update in June. “That’s what keeps me working to get back sooner.”
Yankees invest in his comeback
The organization did not forget about Cabrera during his absence. In December, the Yankees agreed to a one-year, $1.2 million contract to avoid arbitration.
According to YES Network’s Jack Curry, the Yankees; swiss knife is expected to be a full participant in Spring Training. The versatile defender who has played every position except catcher should be ready to contribute in 2026.
Boone has previously called Cabrera the Yankees’ “safety net.” That role awaits him once the ankle fully heals.

A promise to return stronger
Cabrera made a vow to Yankees fans shortly after his surgery in May. The sentiment still resonates as he prepares for his comeback season.
“My return to the field begins today,” he wrote at the time. “I will return, and I will return even stronger to continue giving my best every day. I LOVE U ALL.”
The silent battles have been won. The smile never wavered. And Oswaldo Cabrera is ready to prove that 2025 was just a chapter, not the whole story.
