Less than 24 hours after sealing the deal for Juan Soto and Trent Grisham from the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman shared insights into the trade’s significance, noting, “‘The future is always now. ’24 is our focus, and [we’re] trying to become that last team standing once again.”
Strategic pursuit
Highlighting the prolonged pursuit of Soto, Cashman revealed to SNY, “These efforts weren’t the first attempts to acquire these players,” referencing discussions with the Washington Nationals in 2022. The long-awaited acquisition, particularly of Soto, adds a dynamic dimension to the team’s offense alongside Aaron Judge, with Cashman affirming, “It significantly upgrades us without a doubt.”
Delving into the negotiation process, Cashman detailed the team’s proactive approach, stating, “We attacked this winter like every other winter or trade deadline and we put our best foot forward to see if we could pull down something of interest to us.” The trade, involving right-handed pitchers Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez, Drew Thorpe, and catcher Kyle Higashioka, signifies a considerable investment, but Cashman emphasized the team’s belief in Grisham as a valuable addition.
Navigating future uncertainty
Addressing the uncertainty surrounding Soto’s future beyond the 2024 season, Cashman acknowledged the risk but expressed hope in the Yankees’ appeal, asserting, “We’ve got good people here, whether it’s managers, coaches, his new teammates as well as our fans and the tri-state area, there’s a lot to offer.” He underscored the team’s commitment to maintaining a positive environment, stating, “We certainly want to always, under the Steinbrenner leadership, to make this the mecca of baseball and also to make this an amazing and enjoyable experience for players and their families’ life.”
Cashman concluded by highlighting the trade as “another manifestation of the Steinbrenner legacy,” citing George Steinbrenner’s vision that “the best players in the world should play here for the New York Yankees.” With Juan Soto now donning pinstripes, the trade represents the ongoing efforts of the Steinbrenner family to uphold the Yankees’ legacy as a premier destination for elite baseball talent.
