The Yankees have officially added veteran left-hander Tyler Matzek to their roster, selecting his contract ahead of Tuesday’s series opener. To make room on both the 40-man and active rosters, the team designated right-hander Yoendrys Gomez for assignment.

Matzek, who will wear No. 68, joins the club as the pitching staff continues to deal with a rash of injuries. Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Marcus Stroman, and JT Brubaker are all on the injured list, prompting a need for depth from both the rotation and bullpen.
Despite that need, Gómez never appeared to be seriously considered for a starting role. Once regarded as a promising prospect in the Yankees’ system, the 25-year-old entered the 2025 season out of minor league options. He has worked exclusively in relief this year, logging 10 innings across six appearances, including a three-inning outing last night after Clarke Schmidt was lifted early against the Guardians.
Gómez’s removal from the roster was likely influenced by his recent workload and the presence of another long relief option in Ryan Yarbrough. With Gómez likely unavailable for a few days, the Yankees opted for flexibility by placing him on waivers.
Rehab assignments update
In related roster news, the Yankees also moved right-hander Clayton Beeter’s rehab assignment from Single-A Tampa to Double-A Somerset. Beeter is recovering from a shoulder issue and had been making progress at the lower level.
Meanwhile, veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu is also set to begin a rehab stint with Somerset. The Yankees have been without LeMahieu since spring training due to a right foot fracture, and his return would provide a much-needed boost to the infield.
