The New York Yankees are finalizing a trade to acquire one-time All-Star center fielder and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins, confirmed by CBS Sports’ Jim Bowden.
In return, the Yankees will send three prospects to the Marlins: catcher Agustin Ramirez, infielder Jared Serna, and utility player Abrahan Ramirez, according to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez.
Chisholm’s current performance
Chisholm, 26, has posted a .249/.323/.407 slash line (101 OPS+) with 13 home runs and 22 stolen bases across 101 games this season. Primarily playing center field this season, he has also seen time at second base, his main position until 2022. The Yankees plan to utilize his versatility across various positions.
Chisholm’s trade value
CBS Sports recently highlighted Chisholm as one of the players most likely to be traded at the deadline. The Marlins, under new top executive Peter Bendix, began a teardown earlier this summer by trading Luis Arraez to the Padres. With Jesús Luzardo’s injury, Chisholm emerged as Miami’s top trade chip due to his athleticism, above-average career OPS+, and multiple years of team control. Despite his durability issues, his profile made him a highly sought-after player.
The Yankees entered Saturday with a 60-45 record, two games behind the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. However, they have struggled recently, losing three consecutive games and five of their last six, including a bullpen collapse against the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
Prospect package to Miami
The prospects heading to Miami have shown promise this season. Agustin Ramirez, 22, has split his season between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting .269/.358/.505 with 20 home runs. Known for his power, he has been cross-trained at first base due to concerns about his defensive capabilities as a catcher. Jared Serna, 22, has hit .253/.341/.444 with 13 home runs and 11 stolen bases in 88 games at High-A. An offense-first player, he has experience at second and third base and shortstop, as well as some outfield time. Abrahan Ramirez, 19, has impressed in the Florida Complex League with a .348/.447/.513 slash line, nearly matching walks with strikeouts.
Chisholm’s Role with the Yankees
While it is unclear where Chisholm will play or bat in the Yankees lineup, potential options include center field, second base, and left field. Aaron Judge currently handles center field, and moving Chisholm to leadoff could create lineup balance issues unless Judge shifts to second in the order and Juan Soto to third. The Yankees might also consider bumping Chisholm back in the batting order, although his speed on the base paths is a valuable asset at the top.
Projected Lineup
The tentative projected lineup could be:
- Jazz Chisholm Jr., LF
- Juan Soto, RF
- Aaron Judge, CF
- Giancarlo Stanton, DH
- Austin Wells, C
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B (when healthy)
- Anthony Volpe, SS
- Oswaldo Cabrera, 3B
- Gleyber Torres, 2B
Alternatively, the Yankees might play Chisholm at second, trade the struggling Torres, and keep Alex Verdugo as the primary option in left field. Regardless of the configuration, Chisholm’s acquisition has been positively received by fans and analysts.
Chisholm’s current stats include a .249 batting average, 13 home runs, 50 RBIs, 46 runs, 22 stolen bases, and a .730 OPS. While he may not need to be a superstar in New York, his addition is expected to strengthen the Yankees’ lineup and address their need for both a second baseman and a leadoff hitter.
As the Yankees look to recover from their recent slump, this trade marks a bold move to bolster their roster for a playoff push.
