New York Yankees 4-2 Chicago White Sox

NEW YORK — In a powerful display of hitting prowess, the dynamic duo of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton launched towering home runs, providing the necessary firepower to propel Nestor Cortes to his initial victory in more than a month. This triumph marked the New York Yankees’ fifth consecutive win as they secured a 4-2 triumph over the Chicago White Sox during Friday night’s matchup.

During the fourth inning, Alex Verdugo and Stanton consecutively hammered doubles off the struggling starter Mike Clevinger (0-2), notching RBIs and elevating the Yankees to a 3-1 lead. Securing this victory, New York (31-15) equaled their season-best winning streak and stretched their impressive run to 11 victories in 13 games. This surge has catapulted them a significant 16 games above .500, a remarkable achievement reminiscent of their stellar 99-win season in 2022.

Bronx Bombers Hold On for Narrow Victory

Requiring a sturdy performance in the late innings, the Yankees entrusted their bullpen to seal the deal. Caleb Ferguson stepped up admirably, navigating through a tight spot in the eighth inning while preserving a two-run advantage. Subsequently, Clay Holmes firmly shut the door in the ninth, clinching his league-leading 13th save by tossing a hitless inning. His dominance remains unblemished, boasting an impeccable record of not conceding an earned run in all 19 of his outings this season.

Despite the triumph, the White Sox demonstrated resilience. Andrew Vaughn contributed with two clutch RBI singles, while leadoff hitter Tommy Pham collected three hits for Chicago (14-31). The game unfolded as a battle between the best and the struggling in the American League, yet New York managed to cling onto a narrow victory. Even when a White Sox runner threatened in the final moments, the Yankees silenced their opponent’s bats, sealing the deal with a called third strike on Pham and halting their two-game winning streak, marking just two wins in their last eight outings.

Cortes Shines, Pinstripes Power Through for Home Run Victory

Following a series of outstanding pitching performances resulting in consecutive shutouts, the Yankees were in need of a strong outing from Nestor Cortes. Despite recent struggles, the left-hander rose to the occasion, delivering a stellar performance.

Having previously endured a winless streak of 0-3 in his last four starts and six games overall, Cortes showcased his prowess on the mound. He struck out six batters and kept the White Sox off the scoreboard for seven innings, conceding just five hits. This impressive display finally marked his return to the win column since his victory on April 8th against Miami.

The offensive lineup provided ample support, staying true to the Bronx Bombers moniker. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton continued their power-hitting showcase by launching home runs – a combination that has proven to be a formidable force for New York. With this triumph, the Yankees now boast an exceptional 35-4 record whenever Judge and Stanton both go deep in a game, a statistic that extends beyond the regular season and into the playoffs.

Up Next

Set to pitch for the Yankees in the second matchup of the series versus the White Sox is the promising young right-hander Luis Gil. Following his stellar performance of six scoreless innings resulting in a victory against Tampa Bay last Sunday, the rookie is brimming with confidence. He aims to build on his strong start to the season as he faces off against Chicago’s Brad Keller (0-1, 2.84 ERA).
