New York Yankees 3-5 Baltimore Orioles

Despite Aaron Judge smashing his 56th home run to set a new major league record, the Yankees fell short in a 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. The defeat was overshadowed by Baltimore clinching their second straight playoff berth, solidifying their spot in the American League wild-card race. The Orioles’ victory, paired with Minnesota’s loss to Miami, secured their postseason appearance.

Yankees’ AL East-leading Hopes Threatened by Orioles’ Victory

The Orioles’ offense, led by Anthony Santander’s 44th home run, along with homers from Ramón Urías and Colton Cowser, fueled a win over the Yankees, narrowing New York’s AL East lead to five games with five games left in the season.

While Baltimore clinched the season series and holds the tiebreaker, their path to the division title remains slim, requiring a 5-0 finish and a complete Yankees collapse. New York, having already secured a playoff berth last week, is just one win away from locking up the AL East crown.

Baltimore had been in a slump, losing seven of their last 10 games, but Santander’s sixth-inning homer off Clarke Schmidt provided the spark they needed. Santander, enjoying a career-best season in both homers and RBIs, has become a crucial figure in the Orioles’ push for success.

Yankees Fall Short Against Orioles

The Orioles pushed their lead to 4-1 in the seventh inning after Ramón Urías homered off Tim Mayza. The Yankees attempted a comeback in the bottom of the inning, with Gleyber Torres’ RBI double and Juan Soto‘s run-scoring single cutting the deficit to 4-3. However, a crucial rundown between third base and home ended with Torres being tagged out, preventing Aaron Judge from stepping to the plate with runners on.

Colton Cowser’s homer in the eighth widened Baltimore’s lead. The Yankees’ bullpen struggled as Dean Kremer allowed one run over five innings. Seranthony Domínguez recorded two crucial outs, earning his 11th save in 13 opportunities and closing the door on New York’s rally attempt.

Schmidt Struggles in Yankees loss

Clarke Schmidt delivered a mixed outing, surrendering three runs on four hits over five-plus innings. The Orioles took an early lead, starting with Heston Kjerstad’s RBI grounder in the second inning and Ryan O’Hearn’s run-scoring single in the fourth, which followed a wild pitch by Schmidt.

Aaron Judge provided a spark for the Yankees with a home run in the bottom half of the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap as the Orioles maintained their lead.

In a nod to Yankees history, the ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Josh Hart, the great-nephew of legendary catcher Elston Howard. Former Yankees center fielder and accomplished guitarist Bernie Williams performed the national anthem, adding a special touch to the pre-game ceremonies.

Nestor Cortes, the Yankees’ reliable left-hander, heads into Wednesday’s game riding a strong stretch with a 4-0 record over his last seven starts. His 9-10 record and 3.77 ERA highlight his importance to the Yankees’ recent success. Cortes will square off against right-hander Zach Eflin, who holds a 10-9 record with a 3.54 ERA, in what promises to be a pivotal showdown for New York.
