New York Yankees 1-9 Tampa Bay Rays

The Yankees’ offensive woes persisted on Saturday in a 9-1 defeat against the Rays, in front of a home crowd of 43,173 at Yankee Stadium. This marks the 19th loss in their past 28 games, highlighting a continued slump that has plagued the team over the last month and a half.

How it happened

Aaron Judge’s leadoff walk in the fourth inning briefly sparked hope, but it was quickly extinguished when new cleanup hitter Austin Wells grounded into a double play on the first pitch from Rays starter Taj Bradley. This moment encapsulated the Yankees’ struggles, as they failed to generate any significant momentum throughout the game.

The Yankees managed only five hits, three of which came in the ninth inning, as the Rays showcased their power with four home runs. Juan Soto’s triple in the ninth inning, followed by a run, saved the Yankees from their seventh shutout of the season.

Manager Aaron Boone’s efforts to shake up the lineup have yet to yield results. Ben Rice, who has been struggling at the leadoff spot, has seen his batting average drop to .218. DJ LeMahieu is in the midst of an 0-for-17 slump, and Alex Verdugo is just 3-for-35 in his recent at-bats. Even Wells, who was elevated in the lineup, has only three hits in his last 21 at-bats.

Nestor Cortes, who has been a reliable pitcher at home, struggled on the mound, allowing six runs over 4 ¹/₃ innings. His ERA ballooned to 3.99 after giving up three home runs. The Rays capitalized on Cortes’ mistakes, starting with Curtis Mead’s RBI double in the third inning, followed by Alex Jackson’s three-run homer in the fourth, and back-to-back homers by Isaac Paredes and Randy Arozarena in the fifth.

Josh Maciejewski took over for Cortes in the fifth inning but couldn’t stop the bleeding, allowing Arozarena’s second home run of the game in the seventh inning. The Yankees’ bullpen was merely eating innings by that point, as the game was already out of reach.

The Yankees’ offense continued to falter, managing just one run in the ninth inning when Soto tripled and scored on a groundout by Jahmai Jones. Despite a leadoff double by Rice in the first inning, the Yankees failed to advance him past third base, with Judge and Wells striking out to end the inning. They didn’t put another runner into scoring position until Anthony Volpe’s double in the eighth inning.

Taj Bradley dominated the Yankees’ lineup, pitching seven innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts. The Yankees’ propensity for grounding into double plays continued to haunt them, as they hit into three during the game, including one to end the ninth inning with two runners on base.

The Yankees’ recent performance has been a stark contrast to their earlier success. Since June 15, they have scored just 127 runs, ranking 19th in the league during that span. When Judge and Soto can’t ignite the offense, the team struggles to score.

The loss to the Rays underscores the challenges the Yankees face as they look to turn their season around. Boone’s lineup adjustments have yet to produce the desired results, and the team’s offense remains stagnant. As the trade deadline approaches, the Yankees will need to find solutions to their offensive woes if they hope to make a push for the playoffs.
