The New York Yankees and their All-Star outfielder Juan Soto have not engaged in recent contract negotiations, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. This lack of dialogue comes as Soto approaches free agency, with no apparent progress towards a new agreement.
Earlier in May, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner had expressed openness to mid-season contract talks with Soto. Even the slugger hinted at his willingness. However, industry insiders believe that Juan Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, is unlikely to have his client re-sign before exploring the free agency market.
An anonymous MLB executive questioned Steinbrenner’s public statement about in-season negotiations. The executive suggested that such a declaration might unnecessarily raise fan expectations, given that Boras typically prefers his star clients to test the open market rather than limiting themselves to negotiations with a single team.
According to Olney:
“Hal Steinbrenner’s comments earlier this season about being open to signing Juan Soto during the regular season completely perplexed executives who have negotiated with Soto’s agent, Scott Boras. “I am not sure why he would say that,” one said. “Boras is not going to get a superstar this close to free agency” — to open bidding between rival teams — “and then limit himself to negotiating with one team. All it does is raise expectations of fans.”
At last check, there had been no recent conversations about a Soto megadeal between the Yankees and Boras and no momentum toward a deal before he reaches free agency. In the end, Soto might face this choice: Either take the Yankees’ best offer, to play alongside Aaron Judge in a place where he seems to be having fun in 2024, or take more money from another team.”

Juan Soto’s contract situation has been a persistent topic across three different organizations. The Washington Nationals traded him to the San Diego Padres in 2022 after failing to reach an extension agreement. Subsequently, the Padres traded Soto to the Yankees in the recent offseason, receiving a substantial package of players and prospects in return, including Michael King, Jhony Brito, Kyle Higashioka, Randy Vásquez, and Drew Thorpe.
The trade has proven beneficial for the Yankees so far. At 25 years old, Juan Soto is performing at an MVP-caliber level, boasting impressive statistics with a .295 batting average, .426 on-base percentage, and .558 slugging percentage, along with 23 home runs and 66 RBIs.
As the season progresses, the lack of contract talks between Juan Soto and the Yankees continues to be a point of interest for fans and analysts alike, particularly given his outstanding performance and impending free agency.
The Yankees need Juan Soto
The New York Yankees have successfully paired Juan Soto with Aaron Judge, who is currently considered a leading contender for the American League MVP award. This combination has created what many regard as one of the most formidable offensive duos in Major League Baseball.

With Juan Soto and Judge spearheading their lineup, the Yankees have achieved a strong 58-40 record to start the season. This performance places them just one game behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East and currently positions them as the top wild-card team in the American League.
The Yankees’ decision to trade for Juan Soto was likely made to secure him to a long-term contract. His continued elite performance has likely reinforced this desire. However, the team was also aware of the risk involved, knowing that Soto’s re-signing was not guaranteed.
Several factors work in the Yankees’ favor regarding Juan Soto’s potential re-signing. The organization has the financial capability to make competitive offers that few other teams can match. Additionally, Juan Soto appears to be enjoying his time playing in New York.
The Yankees demonstrated their willingness to invest in top talent recently by re-signing Judge to a nine-year, $360 million contract. While another similar financial commitment could strain their budget, maintaining the Judge-Soto partnership might be deemed worth the investment.
Currently, the team’s primary focus remains on winning their division, securing a playoff berth, and pursuing their 28th World Series title. However, regardless of the 2024 season’s outcome, re-signing Juan Soto will undoubtedly be a top priority for the Yankees’ front office.
The situation highlights the delicate balance between immediate on-field success and long-term roster planning that the Yankees must navigate as they look to maintain their status as perennial contenders.
