Gerrit Cole led the controversy of the night as he trended among the topics on Tuesday. After striking out Mariners’ Jose Caballero in the seventh, the Yankees ace yelled and wagged his finger at the Seattle dugout.

In a thrilling match against the Seattle Mariners, the Yankees emerged victorious with a 3-1 win. However, the game turned more memorable for its share of controversy. Star pitcher Gerrit Cole, who is known for his intense demeanor on the mound, hogged the limelight with his intriguing gesture that amazed fans and umpires alike.

What made Gerrit Cole to react with the finger gesture

Twitter

Gerrit Cole seemed distressed by some of Jose Caballero’s behavior during the at-bat, such as flipping the bat after a foul ball.

When Jose Caballero took his time getting into the batters’ box after using a timeout, Gerrit Cole, clearly frustrated, threw a ball well above Caballero’s head, sending it off the screen behind home plate.

If Gerrit Cole’s dissatisfaction wasn’t apparent, he made it unmistakably clear later in the at-bat when he struck out Caballero with a 98 mph fastball, ending the inning.

The New York Yankees ace found himself in a tight spot. On occasion, Gerrit Cole wiggled his fingers at the Mariners player, indicating that he was out of the box. In the video below, you can see the moment:

Afterward, during a post-match interview, Gerrit Cole took the opportunity to clarify the incident involving Jose Caballero. He explained that Caballero had initiated the exchange by wagging his finger at him, prompting Cole to respond similarly. Yankees voice Michael Kay was the first to sound out that Gerrit Cole was trying to send a message to the Mariners’ batter for his antics.

The incident made home plate umpire Dan Bellino proceeded to approach the New York dugout and engaged in a fervent discussion with Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Gerrit Cole brandished his finger in the direction of the Seattle dugout while making his way off the playing field. The Yankees ace later confirmed that he wagged his finger in response to the Mariners’ coach doing the same at him.

“Their manager [Scott Servais] had some choice words for me coming off the field, and he was wagging his finger at me, so I wagged my finger at him.”

On the other hand, Jose Caballero responded to Daniel Kramer – a Mariners’ correspondent – by stating that Gerrit Cole “disapproved of the way he manipulated the pitch clock.

Fans reaction

Gerrit Cole couldn’t contain his gesture in the heat of the moment. Some fans interpreted this gesture as a sign of arrogance as if Cole was taunting the Mariners or even disrespecting the game. However, I saw it as a display of sheer confidence and intensity, appreciating Cole’s passion for the game.

The gesture quickly spread across social media platforms, igniting debates among fans from both teams.

However, Mariners fans felt it was unnecessary and disrespectful, fueling the rivalry between the two teams.

While the fascinating gesture left some fans disapproving, it added an extra layer of intrigue to the game and sparked discussions among baseball enthusiasts. Ultimately, the Yankees’ victory stood as a testament to Gerrit Cole’s exceptional pitching abilities, overshadowing the controversy surrounding his gesticulation and leaving fans anticipating their subsequent encounter.

In the old days, he would have gotten plunked. Stay in the box, we all know you can’t hit what he throws… Suck it up little guy, you are facing one of the best pitchers in baseball… Being a showman in the box is not going to distract great pitchers.. Sorry, go have a seat
