Newly acquired outfielder Trent Grisham displayed both his power and ability to draw walks in his first spring training game with the New York Yankees on Saturday. The two-time Gold Glove winner acquired from the Padres in the Juan Soto trade, batted second and played center field, going 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk, and a long flyout in the Yankees’ 22-10 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

While known for his power-hitting, Trent Grisham has also historically carried a lower batting average and higher strikeout rate. However, his performance in this exhibition game suggests he may continue to contribute offensively while providing defensive stability in the outfield.

Trent Grisham exhibits power and patience

Newly acquired outfielder Trent Grisham continued his power-hitting display in his Yankees debut. The two-time Gold Glove winner, launched a towering 421-foot home run against a left-handed pitcher, extending the Yankees’ lead in the second inning. This performance aligns with his proficiency in left-handed matchups, showcasing his consistent power potential.

Trent Grisham expressed his satisfaction, mentioning that he had felt good early on, but his greater excitement stemmed from getting on the field and playing in a game setting as a Yankee. He added that it had been a lot of fun.

He brings a blend of power hitting and a high strikeout rate to the New York Yankees. The left-handed hitter, who spent his first season with the Brewers and the last four with the Padres, boasts a career batting average of .216 across his five major league seasons.

Looking specifically at the past two years, Trent Grisham’s offensive performance bears some similarities to Joey Gallo‘s. In 2022, he batted .184 with 17 home runs and 150 strikeouts in 451 at-bats. This trend continued in 2023, where he recorded a .198 average with 13 home runs and 154 strikeouts in 469 at-bats.

While Trent Grisham possesses undeniable power potential, his tendency for strikeouts remains a notable aspect of his offensive profile. This information provides context for fans and analysts as they evaluate his contributions to the Yankees’ lineup.

Manager Aaron Boone remarked that Grisham had experienced both successes and struggles at the plate. Boone noted Trent Grisham’s capability to control the strike zone and acknowledged his power.

Trent Grisham, aged 27, is positioned to serve as the Yankees’ fourth outfielder for the upcoming season. The starting outfield lineup is anticipated to feature Soto in right field, Aaron Judge in center field, and Alex Verdugo in left field.

Boone mentioned that he has discussed the matter with Trent Grisham, indicating that Grisham will have ample playing time. While acknowledging that Grisham might not initially play as frequently if the season began tomorrow, Boone emphasized that circumstances could swiftly alter, potentially leading to increased playing time for Grisham.

Grisham set the tone for Yankees

One of the standout performers was Spencer Jones, the Yankees’ second-ranked prospect. Replacing Grisham in center field for the final five innings, Jones went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, showcasing his power and hitting prowess. He launched a massive 470-foot home run, drew a hit by pitch, and delivered a sharp line-drive RBI single to the opposite field, driving in a total of four runs. His flawless performance in the field further highlighted his well-rounded skillset.

Other young Yankees also contributed to the team’s offensive outburst. Catcher Luis Torrens and second base prospect Jorbit Vivas each launched home runs, adding to the team’s scoring spree. Rising star Spencer Jones, the Yankees’ second-ranked prospect, turned heads in his first spring training appearance on Saturday. Acquired in the first round of the 2022 draft, the 6-foot-6, left-handed hitter is projected to start the season at Double-A Somerset before potentially progressing to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
