Yankees Second baseman Gleyber Torres returned to the starting lineup and demonstrated renewed vigor, going 1-for-4 at the plate and drawing a walk during the Yankees’ 8-3 victory over the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

This marked a swift return for Torres, who had been removed mid-game the previous night after only three innings due to a lack of hustle that limited a hit to a single instead of a double. The disciplinary measure lasted just one day, and Aaron Boone expressed satisfaction with how Torres had responded to the situation.

The Yankees showcased the importance of hustle in Saturday’s game against the Blue Jays, with two standout plays highlighting their effort. Ben Rice‘s sprint induced an error from Toronto, while Gleyber Torres, usually noted for his power, beat out a potential double play with a determined run to second base. Both players later scored on home runs, emphasizing the significance of hustle in a game often dominated by power.

The team’s response was evident in both their hustle and their power hitting, as they launched three home runs to secure an 8-3 victory over the Blue Jays. The game played before 40,218 fans in the Bronx’s heat, saw the Yankees (66-46) rebound from a disappointing loss the previous night.

Yankees pleased to see Torres’ hustle

Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer in the first inning. While this blast tied Babe Ruth‘s 1927 record for the most first-inning home runs (16) in a single season for the franchise, it gave the Yankees a crucial early lead that they never let slip out. New York maintained control throughout, providing a more comfortable experience compared to the previous day’s tension thanks to their hustle.

The Yankees displayed a noticeable increase in hustle during Saturday’s game and their renewed emphasis on hustle led to pivotal plays resulting in crucial runs. This performance, blending hustle with power, contributed to the Yankees’ sixth win in seven games, reflecting their ability to adapt and respond effectively to managerial decisions.

In the second inning, Ben Rice’s determined sprint to first base forced an error by Blue Jays’ second baseman Spencer Horwitz. This effort allowed Rice to reach base safely and set the stage for Trent Grisham’s subsequent home run, extending the Yankees’ lead to three.

Torres, seemingly motivated by his benching, showcased his hustle in the fifth inning. After singling, he sprinted from first to second on a ground ball hit by Jazz Chisholm Jr. Despite Vladimir Guerrero Jr.‘s attempt to complete a double play, Torres narrowly beat the tag at second. This effort proved vital as Anthony Volpe homered three pitches later, marking his fifth home run in 11 games.

Manager Aaron Boone commended his team’s effort, especially under the hot weather conditions. He stressed the importance of these hustle plays in extending innings and creating scoring opportunities.

“Really hot day today, and I thought the guys got after it,” the Yankees skipper said. “But I feel like that’s been the case. … Those are two big plays to extend innings.”

Yankees manager admits his action was a message

Yankees manager Boone, captain Judge, and Torres in the dug out after the second baseman was benched midgame on August 2, 2024.

Manager Boone noted that Torres had handled the brief benching appropriately, suggesting that the message had been received and acted upon. This quick turnaround and positive response from Torres appeared to meet with Boone’s approval, potentially putting the incident behind them as the team moved forward.

Torres’ effort on a long single off the left-field wall had disappointed the manager. This lack of hustle had proven costly when he was later thrown out at home on Anthony Volpe’s double.

In the immediate aftermath of being pulled from the game, Torres had shown support for his teammates from the dugout. Following the loss to the Blue Jays, he had taken responsibility for his actions and offered apologies to both fans and fellow players during a media session.

When pressed for further details about the benching decision, Boone remained somewhat vague, describing it as a “gray area” and “nuanced.” He clarified that the action wasn’t solely about a player not running hard on a potential home run, as such behavior is common across the league and would require frequent benchings if always punished.

“I felt convicted and strongly in that moment that I needed to do that,” he said. “I’m not peeling the onion back too much for you.”

Boone emphasized his conviction in the moment, stating that he felt it necessary to take action. He referenced a similar incident in June against the Mets when Torres was benched for not running out a ground ball. While acknowledging that the move “was certainly a message,” Boone suggested it might have been directed at more than just Torres.

“It’s really as simple as I felt in that moment [Friday] night that I needed to do that for our team,” the Yankees manager said.

Boone expressed confidence that Torres – and the entire starting lineup – would perform their duties appropriately moving forward. He reiterated that the decision was made with the team’s best interests in mind, underlining the importance of maintaining high standards of play and effort.
