Jordan Montgomery Defeats His Former Team Over Five Innings

Jordan Montgomery struck out his former teammates over five innings, and Nolan Arenado drove in the lone run as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees 1-0 on Saturday.

Montgomery (4-3) was removed from his first start for St. Louis after five innings due to cramping. He struck out one batter and allowed two hits and a walk.

Four St. Louis pitchers combined to limit the Yankees to just two hits, singles in the first and third innings. Only two runners made it to second base. Giovanny Gallegos earned his 11th save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out the final two batters.

The lone run came in the first inning, when Paul Goldschmidt doubled with two outs and scored on Arenado’s single.

Domingo Germán (1-2) took the loss after allowing one run and four hits over five innings.

St. Louis has won six straight games and eight of nine overall this season. The Cardinals are 10-2 at Busch Stadium in their last 12 games, including seven straight victories.


Frankie Montas (4-9, 3.18 ERA) will make his first start for the Yankees. He was acquired from Oakland on Monday. He’s never faced St. Louis before.
