Moosic, PA.— Spencer Jones launched a mammoth 443-foot home run off former Cy Young finalist Alek Manoah on Wednesday night, adding another spectacular chapter to his blazing hot Triple-A campaign that has Yankees fans buzzing about his potential September call-up. The towering blast off the 2022 AL Cy Young finalist puts the 24-year-old outfield prospect firmly in the spotlight as the Yankees evaluate their postseason roster options.
The massive homer came in the first inning at Sahlen Field against Buffalo, staking the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to an early 1-0 lead. Jones crushed Manoah’s 0-1 pitch with two outs, sending the ball 443 feet with an exit velocity of 111.2 mph according to the RailRiders’ social media accounts.
Historic power surge defines breakout campaign

Spencer Jones has absolutely obliterated minor league pitching in 2025, leading all of professional baseball with 31 home runs while posting a season-long slugging percentage closer to .610, not the earlier peak rate of .706. The 6-foot-7 left-handed hitter has been nearly unstoppable since his promotion to Triple-A on June 27, batting .400 with 13 home runs in his first 19 games at the level, though his current average has since leveled to .284.
His July performance reached historic levels, as he hit .403/.467/.871 with 13 extra-base hits and 19 RBIs in just 15 games. The month included his first career three-homer game on July 24 against Rochester, when he launched home runs of 401, 425, and 433 feet – all with two strikes against pitcher Bryce Conley.
“Simplicity and the bliss that comes with that,” Jones explained when asked about his approach. “I think just aligning the mind and body in a way that allows you to really, truly be yourself is something that’s opened my eyes this year.”
The power surge earned Jones Minor League Baseball’s Player of the Month honors for July and International League Player of the Month recognition. Baseball America also added him back to their Top 100 prospects list after his torrid start to the season.
Yankees brass taking notice of massive Jones tools
Yankees manager Aaron Boone has been impressed with Jones’ development, particularly his combination of elite physical tools and improved plate discipline.
“He’s having a good season,” Boone said. “So it’s been good to see him – obviously, the size stands out. The athleticism, the speed and power really stands out. The ability to control the strike zone. He’s doing all those things.”
Triple-A manager Shelley Duncan has been even more effusive in his praise, calling Jones a generational talent.
“I’ve never seen anything like it before,” Duncan said. “I’ve never seen a player this talented before in my life. I think the person we’re seeing right now is who he is.”
The Yankees’ fourth-ranked prospect has shown remarkable improvement in his strike zone management compared to previous seasons. His strikeout rate has dropped from roughly 36 percent in 2024 to about 32 percent this year, though contact issues remain a concern for evaluators.
September call-up gains momentum

Jones faces an uphill battle for a September promotion due to roster construction challenges, but his explosive performance is making it increasingly difficult for the Yankees to ignore his production. The team currently has a crowded outfield with Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger, and Jasson Dominguez occupying spots.
However, the Yankees are fighting for their playoff lives after a disappointing second half that has seen them slip from AL East leaders to wild card contenders.
“My heart’s here with this organization,” Jones said when asked about trade rumors that swirled around him at the July deadline. “I’ve been having a lot of fun being a Yankee so far in my career. And you take everything with a grain of salt. It’s part of it, part of the season and I’m excited to see how things go moving forward.”
The main obstacle to Jones’ promotion is his absence from the 40-man roster. The Yankees would need to create space to add him, though they must make that move by winter anyway to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft.
Manoah matchup provides perfect test
Wednesday’s home run carried extra significance given Manoah’s pedigree as a former elite pitcher. The Toronto Blue Jays right-hander finished third in 2022 AL Cy Young voting after posting a 16-7 record with a 2.24 ERA and franchise-record 0.99 WHIP.
Manoah has been attempting a comeback from Tommy John surgery on a minor league rehab assignment with Buffalo. The former All-Star held the RailRiders in check after Jones’ blast, retiring eight consecutive batters at one point, showing flashes of his former dominance.
The confrontation represented exactly the type of high-level competition that Jones has been seeking to prove himself against as he pushes for his major league debut.
Physical tools mirror Judge’s impressive frame
At 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds, Jones draws frequent comparisons to Aaron Judge due to his imposing frame and left-handed power potential. He has shown elite bat speed approaching 80 mph and has been nearly flawless defensively, committing few, if any, errors in over 80 total chances in center field.
Jones was selected 25th overall in the 2022 draft out of Vanderbilt University, signing for $2.88 million. His combination of size, speed, and raw power has long made him one of the Yankees’ most intriguing prospects, though questions about his contact ability have followed him throughout his professional career.
Spencer Jones’ 443-foot blast off Cy Young finalist Alek Manoah represents another milestone in what has become a truly special season for the Yankees’ top outfield prospect. With 31 home runs leading all of minor league baseball, and the team fighting for playoff positioning, Jones has positioned himself as a legitimate September call-up candidate — though 40-man roster logistics remain a major hurdle.
His remarkable transformation from strikeout-prone prospect to minor league home run king has put him squarely on the Yankees’ radar at the perfect time. Whether that translates to pinstripes in September remains to be seen, but Jones has certainly made his case in emphatic fashion.

JC Escarra is the odds on player to be recalled on September 1, as the Yankees have relievers coming off the IL who will grab the 2nd of 2 spots. You no longer can call up the entire 40 man roster. Plus, right now, Dominguez is sitting on the bench. Plus the AAA now ends somewhere like September 21, not Labor Day weekend, and I’m not having him sit and lose like 70 ABs.
