New York Yankees fans may soon hear a familiar voice return to the airwaves during the 2024 MLB playoffs. Legendary radio broadcaster John Sterling is reportedly considering coming out of retirement to call the postseason games this October, according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic.

Rumors circulate: John Sterling in talks for Yankees playoff booth

According to the latest rumors, John Sterling could return to broadcast Yankees games during the playoffs.

Marchand noted that Sterling is expected to discuss his potential return with Chris Oliviero, president of Audacy New York, in the coming days. While no formal request has been made by Oliviero, who oversees WFAN, the flagship station for Yankees radio broadcasts, the possibility of Sterling’s comeback is on the table.

Sterling, who abruptly retired in April 2024 after the regular season had already begun, left an indelible mark on Yankees history. Over his illustrious career, the 86-year-old broadcaster called an impressive 5,631 games. The Yankees honored him with an on-field ceremony to celebrate his contributions to the team and its fanbase.

Since Sterling’s departure, WFAN has not appointed a permanent successor to fill his role. Rickie Ricardo, Justin Shackil, and Emmanuel Berbari have been the most frequent voices in the booth, handling play-by-play duties. However, none of them have been officially named as Sterling’s replacement.

Sterling made a brief return to the booth earlier this season during a Yankees game against the Cleveland Guardians, where he called the action in a 9-5 extra-innings loss. This special appearance coincided with an event honoring Sterling and longtime analyst Suzyn Waldman, where fans received commemorative shirts featuring the duo.

If Sterling decides to return for the playoffs, it would be a temporary move. Marchand reported that Sterling plans to return to retirement after the postseason. Meanwhile, WFAN and the Yankees are expected to conduct a thorough search for a new full-time play-by-play announcer for the 2025 season. Ricardo, Shackil, and Berbari are all likely candidates under consideration for the role.

Sterling’s potential return would undoubtedly be welcomed by Yankees fans, who have cherished his iconic calls over the years. Even if his time back in the booth is brief, it would serve as a fitting encore for a broadcaster who has been such a significant part of the Yankees’ legacy.
