Two divisional rivals of the New York Yankees have joined the race to sign slugger Juan Soto. The Boston Red Sox appear ready to make a bold return to the high-stakes free-agent market, reportedly targeting the elite outfielder. Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly the first team to secure a meeting with Juan Soto and his agent.

The Red Sox’s pursuit of Juan Soto marks a potential shift back to the club’s pre-2019 aggressive spending strategy, say industry experts. Acquiring the superstar would provide a major boost to Boston’s offense, adding a player with a career .421 on-base percentage and a recent high of 41 home runs. The potential signing would carry added weight given the historic Boston-New York rivalry, as the Yankees are also expected to court the star outfielder.

Though Boston is not currently seen as a frontrunner, analysts recognize the team’s serious commitment to competing for the player’s services. Despite recent misses on top-tier free agents, analysts say landing Juan Soto could be transformative for the Red Sox, signaling a return to baseball prominence and intensifying the competition with their rivals in New York.

What makes Red Sox chase Juan Soto

The Red Sox have intensified their pursuit of star outfielder Juan Soto, with multiple sources confirming he has emerged as their top target this offseason. According to industry analysts, Boston is positioned as a serious contender in the bidding race, moving beyond preliminary discussions in their efforts to secure Soto.

Juan Soto’s impressive track record illustrates why he’s such a sought-after asset. The 26-year-old excelled with the Yankees last season, delivering 41 home runs, 109 RBIs, and a .288 batting average during a standout season that culminated in a World Series appearance. Since debuting with the Washington Nationals in 2018, Juan Soto has consistently performed at an elite level, earning four All-Star nods across seven seasons.

His career statistics reinforce his value: he boasts a .285 batting average, a .421 on-base percentage, and a .532 slugging percentage. Over a typical 162-game season, Juan Soto averages 35 home runs and 102 RBIs. In postseason play, he’s a proven contributor, with his resume including a 2019 World Series title with Washington and a .327 average with four home runs and nine RBIs in last year’s playoff run with New York.

Analysts note that early involvement in free agency talks can signal a team’s serious commitment, a move often respected in the negotiation arena—even if it doesn’t guarantee a signing. Reports indicate that the Toronto Blue Jays have taken an assertive stance in pursuing Juan Soto, undeterred by the steep financial requirements expected to compete with baseball’s biggest spenders. Sources say the Blue Jays are determined to make a substantial push for Juan Soto.

Insiders report that Toronto has managed to secure the first in-person meeting with Juan Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, in California, edging out anticipated favorites like the Yankees and Mets. This step builds on the team’s aggressive approach from last winter, as Toronto appears focused on pairing another premier player alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Juan Soto’s recent season stats with the Yankees reinforce his high value. In 2024, he notched career highs, including 41 home runs, and was instrumental in leading New York to its first World Series appearance since 2009. His standout performance included an American League-best 128 runs, 109 RBIs, and a .419 on-base percentage. Analysts expect his impressive resume will drive record-breaking contract demands, as Juan Soto’s free agency could reshape the financial landscape of MLB signings.

Industry sources have outlined Juan Soto’s upcoming meetings with prospective teams, with the Boston Red Sox reportedly meeting with the outfielder later this week, followed by a session with the New York Yankees scheduled for next Monday.

Baseball insiders report a growing roster of interested teams, including the Dodgers, Giants, and Red Sox, alongside two additional teams—one of which is said to be from a smaller market. Financial analysts note that the Dodgers’ recent commitment to Shohei Ohtani, valued at $700 million over ten years, could limit their ability to make a competitive offer for Juan Soto unless market dynamics shift.

The Giants and Blue Jays, who were both contenders in the Ohtani sweepstakes, are seen as strong suitors for Juan Soto, with each franchise retaining financial flexibility after Ohtani’s decision. Industry observers suggest that the slugger’s free agency could wrap up swiftly, potentially before the December 8 Winter Meetings in Dallas.

Toronto’s current lineup, which includes Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and George Springer, provides a solid foundation that could appeal to Juan Soto. Financial filings indicate the Blue Jays have approximately $104 million available for roster development, positioning them as contenders, though experts caution that Juan Soto’s high-profile free agency is attracting considerable competition.
