During a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, the crowd broke into “Re-sign Soto” chants, urging the Bronx Bombers to retain Juan Soto at the end of the season.
As of this publication, the Yankees secured a 6-3 win over the Cardinals on Friday night. Juan Soto made a significant impact, scoring a run, recording two hits, and driving in an RBI in four at-bats. This performance extends his recent hot streak, bringing his total to 11 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs over the last 17 games.
Last week, Juan Soto called out Brian Cashman
On August 26, Juan Soto acknowledged the fans’ chants but directed them towards Yankees President of Baseball Operations, Brian Cashman, stating, “They have to talk to Cashman.”
The Yankees acquired Soto in an offseason trade, securing the superstar right fielder for just one year before he becomes a free agent.
While similar deals have sometimes led to quick extensions—such as Francisco Lindor with the Mets and Mookie Betts with the Dodgers—no agreement has been reached between Juan Soto and the Yankees.
During Sunday’s 10-3 victory over the Rockies, the chants to re-sign Juan Soto were loud enough to be heard on the broadcast. When asked about it post-game, Soto simply said, “I don’t know. They have to talk to Cashman.” Aaron Judge, currently in the second year of his nine-year, $360 million contract, echoed the fans’ sentiments. “The fans are excited, and they’ve got every right to be,” Judge told reporters.
Despite his impressive season, Juan Soto seems unlikely to claim his first MVP award, trailing behind Judge and facing stiff competition from Bobby Witt Jr., according to CBS.
CBS also reported that the Yankees, currently in first place, have a legitimate shot at capturing their first AL pennant since 2009. Soto, who won the World Series with the Nationals in 2019, is expected to seek the best offer in free agency, with his agent Scott Boras leading the negotiations.
