NEW YORK — Pete Alonso has served as the Mets’ primary power source for years. Now, with contract negotiations approaching and New York’s National League squad struggling to secure a playoff spot, the first baseman’s recent statements suggest he could consider wearing pinstripes in the Bronx.

Alonso opens up about Mets future

The slugger joined The Show: A NY Post Baseball Podcast, sitting down with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman. When pressed about his intentions and desire to remain in Queens, Alonso offered a response that balanced current allegiance with clear flexibility for what lies ahead.

“I mean, for me, I’ve grown up in this organization. And it has been really special,” Alonso said. “Obviously, the fans have shown nothing but support. But the people that I work with every single day, I go to battle with. And I’ve been blessed with unbelievable coaches, clubhouse staff, teammates. So for me, those people are really, really important to me. And it has been really special.

“But again, we’ll see what happens. I love it, it’s great, but you can’t really predict anything. And for me… I am focused on trying to put this thing across the finish line,” he continued. “I haven’t really thought about the free agent thing until we’re talking about it right now.

“It would be great to stay. But, again, whatever happens, happens. I can’t get a crystal ball. I wish I could, but we’ll see.”

These statements represent perhaps the strongest indication that the four-time All-Star would consider departing from the Mets. Many observers now view the crosstown Yankees as a probable landing spot.

Strong 2025 season boosts his value

The 30-year-old has delivered impressive production this season. Through mid-September, Pete Alonso carries a .271 batting average with an .873 OPS. He has launched 33 homers and driven in 113 runs. These statistics enhance his negotiating position while he decides between accepting his 2026 player option or entering free agency after this campaign.

Alonso has anchored New York’s National League offense for several seasons. However, the club has stumbled recently and sits behind in the wild card standings. This disappointing performance, combined with his contractual situation, has intensified speculation about a possible move to the Bronx.

Yankees seen as a top landing spot

Multiple sources have connected New York’s American League franchise with the power-hitting first baseman.

According to Sports Illustrated, the Yankees rank “among Alonso’s top free agency fits.” Baseball reporter Jon Heyman stated, “Potential other teams [aside from the Mets for Alonso], I mean, you’ve got to say the Yankees, right? I do think the Yankees are a potential [team] for Alonso.”

The Yankees currently have Paul Goldschmidt under a limited contract. They require a stable solution at first base for coming seasons. Alonso fits their needs perfectly. His offensive production would complement Aaron Judge and Juan Soto while providing protection for developing hitters.

Mets’ slip makes Yankees option more attractive

Queens’ inconsistent performance has amplified the rumors. A team many predicted would compete for championships in 2025 has instead disappointed. This leaves Alonso uncertain about the organization’s direction. As he approaches his peak salary years, these circumstances provide motivation to explore other opportunities.

Should Alonso decline his option, New York’s American League team will likely pursue him aggressively. Team owner Hal Steinbrenner has shown willingness to invest in major acquisitions. The Yankees’ vacancy at first base transforms speculation into realistic possibility.

Balancing loyalty and opportunity

The first baseman’s statements reveal authentic appreciation for his current organization. His mention of “unbelievable coaches, clubhouse staff, teammates” highlights strong relationships. However, his phrase “whatever happens, happens” indicates he has considered alternative destinations.

Queens’ front office might offer an extension before he tests free agency. Still, baseball analysts expect the Yankees’ spending power and title ambitions to create compelling competition should he become available.

Personal and historical ties increase the plausibility

Additional factors support the Yankees connection. Jon Heyman has noted potential relationships between Alonso and Yankees leadership, specifically Hal Steinbrenner. The slugger has reportedly spoken positively about various elements of New York life outside baseball.

Earlier coverage has consistently included the Yankees among franchises expected to pursue Alonso after he becomes available. These reports continue fueling discussion.

Alonso’s words resonate in the Bronx

The most notable aspect of Alonso’s interview was his embrace of uncertainty. “I love it, it’s great, but you can’t really predict anything,” he said. This statement caught attention from supporters and front offices throughout baseball. While the Yankees observe their competition struggle, Alonso’s openness appears welcoming to the Bronx faithful.

Yankees fans, whose team continues fighting for postseason positioning, already discuss adding Alonso’s offense next season. His potential signing would inject fresh excitement into a roster pursuing continued American League East supremacy.

Alonso’s “We’ll see what happens” attitude has been received as friendly overture. It signals not only receptiveness to proposals but active interest in considering different paths.

The slugger has made no promises to the Yankees. He has not eliminated remaining with the Mets either. Yet his public stance lowers obstacles for potential negotiations.

Acquiring Alonso would require substantial investment from the Yankees. His 2025 production justifies significant compensation. The organization already carries major salary obligations.
