The New York Yankees are facing a pressing need to bolster their batting order, particularly with hitters capable of driving in runs when players are in scoring positions. In 2023, the Yankees scored only 650 runs, ranking among the five lowest-scoring teams in the MLB. Even their former MVP, Giancarlo Stanton, who usually occupies the cleanup spot, had a dismal season with a slash line of .191/.275/.420, marking the worst-hitting performance of his career.
Yankees’ batting woes
Josh Donaldson faced criticism for his lackluster play when batting fourth during the season, further exacerbating the team’s scoring woes. With two of their marquee players struggling to produce, New York finds itself in a position where Stanton needs to regain his form or the team must explore alternative options to put points on the scoreboard consistently.
Gleyber Torres has held the third spot in the batting rotation and contributed 68 RBIs across 596 at-bats, but the Yankees require more from their top-tier players.
One potential avenue for improvement could be pursuing soon-to-be free-agent star outfielder Juan Soto. Soto was responsible for driving in 109 runs while batting third for the San Diego Padres in the same season. Acquiring a player of Soto’s caliber could be a significant step in the right direction.
Exploring the path to offensive revival
In addition to their batting struggles, the Yankees faced issues advancing runners on base. They recorded just 221 doubles, tying with the New York Mets for the lowest mark in the MLB, and ranked 13th out of 15 American League teams in triples with only 15. Getting hitters past first base proved challenging for the team, and their hitting metrics reflected this problem with a bottom-10 line drive percentage and a middle-of-the-pack ground ball percentage at 42.5 percent.
While the Yankees were proficient in hitting home runs, relying solely on power-hitting often led to inconsistent offensive performance, hindering their playoff aspirations. The absence of Aaron Judge for 56 games also impacted the team’s ability to put pressure on opposing pitchers early in the lineup. Furthermore, they struggled in areas like stolen bases and sacrifice flies, ranking among the bottom 10 teams in those categories.
As the offseason approaches, the Yankees’ front office and coaching staff must address these issues to strengthen their chances of returning to postseason play. Despite the subpar hitting statistics, the team managed to achieve a winning season, but their primary objective remains to reach the playoffs and contend for a championship.
