When spring training commenced, Luis Gil was an afterthought in the Yankees’ potential starting rotation. However, his performances have catapulted him into the American League Rookie of the Year race and even garnered him attention in the AL Cy Young Award conversation.

The 24-year-old right-hander stepped up when Gerrit Cole was sidelined with an elbow injury before the season, proving to be the ace the Bronx Bombers needed. His dominant 14-strikeout outing against the White Sox was followed by a masterful 6⅓ scoreless innings against the Mariners on Thursday, where he allowed just one hit and struck out eight in the Yankees’ 5-0 victory.

Luis Gil, in his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022, set a Yankees record by making 11 consecutive starts of at least five innings while allowing two or fewer earned runs. His ERA stands at an impressive 2.11, ranking third in the AL among qualified pitchers.

The Dominican Republic native has been particularly dominant in May, posting a 5-0 record with a minuscule 0.59 ERA for the month. His amazing two-month stretch has propelled him into a competitive AL Rookie of the Year conversation, with oddsmakers taking notice.

At FanDuel Sportsbook, Luis Gil’s odds of winning the award are +380, trailing only Mason Miller (+125) and Colton Cowser (+360). Before the season, he was “off the board” at BetMGM Sportsbook, suggesting oddsmakers gave him virtually zero chance of taking home the hardware. Last week, before his 14-strikeout outing and latest win, his odds were +1800 at BetMGM.

Luis Gil has even gained traction in the AL Cy Young race, albeit as a long shot given the stiff competition. At FanDuel, he is tied with fellow Yankees starter Clark Schmidt at +4000 odds, the 11th-best in the Junior Circuit.

Luis Gil’s outstanding season for the Yankees showed no signs of slowing down on Thursday afternoon in the Bronx. Fresh off a dominant 14-strikeout performance against the White Sox, the right-hander delivered another impressive outing in the series finale against the Seattle Mariners.

Luis Gil allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out eight batters before exiting with one out in the seventh inning to a standing ovation from the Yankees faithful. Yankees manager Aaron Boone lauded Luis Gil’s performance, highlighting him as one of the league’s top pitchers who continues to improve. Boone praised Gil’s exceptional talent and high potential, emphasizing his current impressive delivery.

The young pitcher has been a standout all season, with his recent performances in May being particularly noteworthy. Luis Gil is a strong contender for his first AL Pitcher of the Month award, having allowed just two earned runs while striking out 35 and recording a 0.59 ERA and 0.72 WHIP across five outings.

Aaron Judge, who homered on Thursday, commended Luis Gil’s consistency, noting how remarkable it has been to see him maintain such high-performance levels. He was immensely joyful to watch him stepping up and consistently showcasing the skills he had before his injury last year.

— YES Network (@YESNetwork) May 23, 2024

Overall, Luis Gil has compiled a 2.11 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 70 strikeouts this season. The 25-year-old attributed his breakout to various factors, primarily the ability to establish and stick to a routine now that he is fully recovered. Luis Gil expressed gratitude for the opportunity, attributing his success to consistent training and a focused routine between starts, which he believes have been crucial in preparing him to perform at his best.

As Luis Gil continues to shine, his contributions propel the Yankees and garner attention across the league, solidifying his place as one of the game’s emerging stars.
