New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo recently received a new set of batting gloves from Franklin, the official supplier of Major League Baseball gloves. Verdugo observed that these new gloves matched his previous ones in color and design but learned that their chemical composition had been altered. Franklin removed cobalt and chromate from the production process following Verdugo’s unexpected diagnosis of an allergy to his old gloves.
In his debut game with the new gloves, Verdugo showed encouraging signs at the plate despite the Yankees’ 9-2 defeat to the Colorado Rockies. He hit his first home run since July 6, connecting for a drive to right-center field in the fourth inning. The outfielder ended the game 1-for-3 with a walk, though he was denied additional hits on a couple of occasions.
Before the game, Verdugo displayed red blotches and blisters on the backs of his hands, symptoms he first noticed around 2021 or 2022. He found these marks unusual, as he was used to calluses, blisters, and bruises on his palms from batting, but not on the back of his hands.
Initially unsure of the cause, Verdugo had been taping his hands under his batting gloves. It wasn’t until this year’s All-Star break, after consulting a doctor, that he identified the gloves as the source of his skin irritation.
This case underscores the unforeseen issues athletes can face and the critical role of equipment adjustments in addressing individual health needs.
Verdugo’s glove switch ends batting woes
Verdugo has faced a noticeable drop in his hitting performance since June 4, batting just .198 with only two home runs, placing him among the league’s least-productive hitters. This decline is particularly stark given his strong start to the season.
He has expressed some relief in identifying the potential cause of his hand issues and finding a solution. The Yankees star is optimistic about the new gloves, hoping they will eliminate the need for additional hand-taping and improve his overall game performance. He believes these adjustments could significantly enhance his hitting and other aspects of his play.
Before the game, Verdugo shared his positive outlook, noting his satisfaction with the new gloves and his anticipation of their impact on his performance. He is hopeful that the gloves will provide the comfort and effectiveness needed to boost his game without extra hand protection.
“They feel the same,” he said prior to the game. “I’m kind of surprised — same color combo, nothing different. I’m happy. We’ll see. Hopefully we can use them with no tape on my hands and we’ll see how it goes. It just makes it a lot easier to do a lot more things.”
Yankees Manager Aaron Boone has shown encouragement regarding Verdugo’s recent performance. Boone acknowledged Verdugo’s solid contact with the ball in recent games, despite not all well-hit balls resulting in hits, aside from the home run.
Boone advised Verdugo to stay persistent and continue his efforts through this challenging period. The manager’s comments reflect confidence in Verdugo’s ability to overcome his struggles and return to form, underscoring the importance of consistency and perseverance in baseball.
