Days after the Yankees announced that Nestor Cortes will not return to New York next season, the pitcher took to Instagram to express gratitude for his time with the team. The left-hander reflected on his journey and the impact the Yankees and their fans had on his career.

“It seems like I’ve written this too many times about New York. But I’m always grateful and proud of being groomed by the Yankee organization,” Cortes, 30, wrote in his heartfelt post, which featured a collection of photos from his time with the team.

The Yankees traded Cortes to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday in exchange for reliever Devin Williams, marking the end of Cortes’ third stint with the organization. Known for his quirky pitching style and resilience, Cortes earned a devoted following during his time in the Bronx.

In his post, Cortes expressed his deep appreciation for the city and its passionate fanbase. “A city full of life and tremendous support from the fans. Where we as players leave everything out on the field regardless of the outcome because the city is breathing and living by every win,” he wrote. “With such a unique journey.”

Cortes’ story with the Yankees began when they selected him in the 36th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He left and returned to the organization twice before rejoining the team in 2021. His career reached new heights in 2022 when he posted a 2.44 ERA over 28 starts and earned his first All-Star selection. That breakout season solidified his status as a fan favorite.

While injuries limited his 2023 season, Cortes rebounded in 2024 with a career-high 174 ⅓ innings pitched and a 3.77 ERA. He also played a pivotal role in the Yankees’ postseason run, starting Game 1 of the World Series. However, that game ended on a sour note when Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam, a moment Cortes will surely never forget.

Reflecting on his career, Cortes embraced his underdog journey and the challenges he faced. “I’d do it all over again if I had to,” he wrote. “A 36-rounder in 2013. Through the years of being an organizational minor league pitcher, to having three different stints with the team, to becoming an MLB All-Star, and endless opportunities to prove myself time after time.”

Cortes’ departure marks the end of an era for a player who embodied grit and determination. Though he will now don a Brewers uniform, his legacy in New York is one of perseverance, humility, and a deep connection to the Yankees’ loyal fanbase.
