The New York Yankees‘ acquisition of Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs is one of the most talked-about moves of the offseason. While the trade itself wasn’t entirely unexpected, the details surrounding it—and the implications for top prospect Jasson Dominguez—have sparked significant debate among fans and analysts.

Bellinger’s strong desire to join the Yankees

According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Cody Bellinger’s interest in donning the pinstripes wasn’t a secret. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman confirmed the player’s enthusiasm, recounting conversations with Bellinger’s agent, Scott Boras. “I’ve been hearing it for a long time,” Cashman said. “Scott [Boras] has been saying, ‘Can you get him over here? He’s driving me crazy. He wants to be a Yankee.'”

This level of interest made it relatively easy for the Yankees to finalize the deal, which was only made possible after the Cubs decided yesterday to trade their star outfielder. Cashman noted, “I know the other destination. I won’t say who it was, but if we didn’t pull him down, he would’ve been off the board.”

Bellinger’s offensive numbers are expected to benefit significantly from his new home ballpark. Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch is notoriously favorable for left-handed hitters, and Cashman pointed out another advantage: “Not only should his numbers be helped by 81 games in Yankee Stadium, but there are also six games against the Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field, which has the same dimensions.”

What this means for Jasson Dominguez

On September 9, 2024, Yankees' Jasson Dominguez recorded his first hit of the season at Yankee Stadium in a game against the Royals.

While the Yankees’ addition of Bellinger strengthens their lineup, some fans argue it signals a lack of trust in Jasson Dominguez’s readiness to be the everyday center fielder. Dominguez, nicknamed “The Martian,” was expected to step into the role in 2025. However, with Bellinger now slotted for center field, Dominguez may find himself transitioning to left field instead.

Critics of this decision point to the Yankees’ World Series aspirations as a likely reason for favoring Bellinger’s veteran presence. While Dominguez’s potential remains sky-high, Cashman appears cautious about handing him the reins in such a critical season.

“It’s not necessarily a vote of no confidence in Dominguez,” said one insider. “But the Yankees clearly want proven players in key positions to maximize their chances of success.”

Despite the questions surrounding Dominguez’s role, the Yankees’ acquisition of a former MVP like Bellinger is undoubtedly a positive move. Bellinger brings elite defensive skills, versatility, and a bat capable of thriving in the Bronx.

Brian Cashman remains optimistic about Dominguez’s future, saying, “I’d like to see him get his shot now.” However, as of now, the Yankees are prioritizing experienced talent to support their World Series ambitions.

The Yankees’ plans for Jasson Dominguez in 2025 remain a topic of discussion, and fans will closely monitor how the team integrates its young talent alongside veteran stars. For now, Cody Bellinger’s move to New York represents both an exciting addition and a calculated gamble on the team’s part.

With Opening Day approaching, Yankees fans will soon see how this reshaped roster performs—and whether the combination of veteran power and youthful promise can deliver the championship the Bronx Bombers so desperately seek.
