The New York Yankees face an ignominious World Series exit after they allowed their lead to slip away and the Dodgers to rally and win Game 5. The team’s hopes of capturing their first title since 2009 were dashed with it.
With fans seeking responsibility and team reconstruction, the Yankees also prepare for a transformative offseason with significant roster questions looming. Several core players could depart in free agency, reshaping the team’s future.
Leading the list is 26-year-old outfielder Juan Soto, who may pursue a historic contract projected by Spotrac at $514.6 million over 14 years. Ace Gerrit Cole, 34, holds a valuable opt-out clause on his remaining four years and $144 million, and he could explore market interest for a new five-year deal estimated at $178.9 million.
Other key players on the market include outfielder Alex Verdugo and reliever Clay Holmes, both expected to command multi-year deals in the $50-60 million range. Second baseman Gleyber Torres, 27, could see a more modest three-year offer around $21 million.
The bullpen may also face changes, with veterans Tommy Kahnle, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Luke Weaver hitting free agency. The Yankees hold club options on first baseman Anthony Rizzo ($17 million), reliever Lou Trivino ($5 million), and Weaver ($2.5 million), providing some flexibility in managing next season’s roster.
Relief pitchers Tim Hill and Jonathan Loaisiga could also depart, their market value still to be determined. With these potential changes, the Yankees’ front office faces a pivotal offseason, balancing roster stability with the need for fresh talent in 2025 and beyond.

Cole and Weaver are back. I expect Hill to resign here. Verdugo, Kahnle, Torres, and Rizzo, & Trivino I expect to be gone. I don’t know the market for Loaisiga, but if Sevy resigns with the Mets, I can see him signing there as the Mets seem to get Sevy healthy and maybe they can do the same for him. As long as the Yankees make a real offer to Soto to start with, I see no reason why Boras wouldn’t be willing to negotiate here.
