Move over superstars – there’s a new name generating excitement in the Bronx: Anthony Volpe. The young shortstop’s blistering start began on Friday, notching two more hits despite the Yankees’ 3-0 defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The sophomore shortstop slashed three hits, plating two runs, and swiping two daring bags. His triple-threat brilliance propelled the Yankees’ 8-3 conquest over the Blue Jays on Sunday, leaving an indelible mark on the hallowed Bronx lore. On Monday, it continued with a three-run homer.

The 22-year-old boasts an impressive .417 batting average and a stellar 1.154 OPS through 10 games, collecting 15 hits.

Anthony Volpe’s scorching start to the season has caught the attention of baseball analysts, with MLB Tonight’s Harold Reynolds offering insights on Friday’s broadcast.

"We're looking at a star, folks."

Reynolds pointed to a seemingly minor but impactful adjustment in Anthony Volpe’s batting mechanics compared to 2023. Last season, his stance featured a tendency to stand too upright and dip his body as the pitcher released the ball. This year, he’s replaced that movement with a more controlled loading action.

This tweak offers a double benefit: it allows Anthony Volpe to generate more power on his swing while also keeping his head steadier, leading to improved tracking and more consistent contact.

The results speak for themselves. Anthony Volpe has shown a noticeable improvement in key metrics this season. He’s demonstrating better discipline at the plate, striking out less and drawing more walks. Additionally, his batted balls are leaving the bat with greater velocity. With these changes seemingly taking root, Volpe’s early-season success appears sustainable.

Anthony Volpe is rising faster than expected

After a solid, yet not spectacular, rookie season in 2023, Anthony Volpe is starting to blossom and fulfill the high expectations that followed him as a first-round draft pick. The comparisons to Yankees legend Derek Jeter were inevitable, adding pressure to his debut year.

“What hasn’t he done?” Giancarlo Stanton says about Anthony Volpe. “He’s all over on defense. He’s shooting the ball everywhere on offense, stealing bases, causing havoc for the other team. It’s been fun to watch.”

Anthony Volpe’s raw talent was undeniable as a rookie, evidenced by his 21 home runs, 24 stolen bases, and a surprising Gold Glove Award. However, his strikeout rate remained high at 27.8%, and his batting average (.209) and on-base percentage (.283) were below average.

“Great at-bats,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Even the ones that don’t end in a result for him, he’s doing such a better job of laying off pitches. He’s got so much more versatility in the zone. He’s using the entire field. It’s just fun to watch him go up there and put at-bats together. It’s competitive all the time now, which is exciting.”

While he might not be Derek Jeter yet, Anthony Volpe’s recent tear suggests he’s well on his way to etching his own name in the illustrious Yankees’ record books. His early-season performance has injected a surge of optimism into the Bronx faithful, and fans are excited to see what the future holds for this rising star.

Armed with a more refined swing, a more mature approach at the plate, and a year of MLB experience under his belt, Anthony Volpe is quickly developing into the type of impactful player the Yankees envisioned when they drafted him.

In the fourth inning on Monday, Anthony Volpe’s thunderous blast off Jesus Luzardo shattered the silence, igniting the Yankees’ offensive onslaught while providing a deluge of run support that would prove more than sufficient in their shutout triumph. With a single, majestic swing, the prodigious shortstop doubled his season’s home run and RBI tallies, his talents on full display. Yet, such was the magnitude of his performance that his average dipped ever so slightly to a still-stratospheric .417, leaving him perched atop the batting hierarchy, a beacon of excellence in the grand cathedral of baseball.

“When he was coming up through our system, we envisioned him as one of those core leaders,” Boone said. “He’s got that DNA to him. He’s got that baseball savvy to him. Being in the middle of the diamond with the all-around game he plays … he’s starting to look like that complete, well-rounded really good player.”
