NEW YORK — When Max Fried took the mound for the Yankees on Opening Day Wednesday night in San Francisco and delivered 6 1/3 shutout innings in a 7-0 rout of the Giants, the spotlight once again landed squarely on the left-hander. But over the past year, Yankees fans have grown just as curious about the woman who has been quietly supporting Fried through the biggest chapter of his career.
Reni Meyer-Whalley, Fried’s girlfriend, first came to public attention in December 2024 when she sat front row alongside Fried’s mother, Carrie, during his introductory press conference at Yankee Stadium. Yankees manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman presented flowers to both women before Fried addressed the media about his record eight-year, $218 million deal.
It was a rare personal reveal for a pitcher who has kept his private life almost entirely off limits. And it left fans asking a simple question: who is Reni Meyer-Whalley?
A former college volleyball standout at USC
Meyer-Whalley is a former Division I volleyball player who competed as a libero and defensive specialist for the USC Trojans. She was born and raised in Los Angeles and attended Marymount High School, where she helped lead the team to the California state championship in 2012 and was named team MVP.
She began her college career at the University of Washington, where she redshirted her freshman year, before transferring to USC. During her senior season in 2017, Meyer-Whalley appeared in all 35 of the Trojans’ matches. She started 34 of them and played in every set, logging a team-leading 12 double-doubles that year.
Meyer-Whalley comes from a family steeped in athletics. She has eight siblings, including an older sister who also played college volleyball. Her parents are Tom Whalley and Melanie Meyer.

From the court to a career in branding and skincare
After graduating from USC in December 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in communication and media studies, Meyer-Whalley moved into coaching, working as an assistant volleyball coach for the Sunshine Volleyball Club. She also holds a degree in sociology from the University of Washington.
She later pivoted to the business side. In 2020, she began working as a marketing and branding specialist for Sweet Flower and then took a marketing coordinator role with Uni Refill System. Since 2022, she has worked as a freelance executive assistant for House of Stephanie, a couture jewelry line. She is also a licensed aesthetician at Vanessa Hernandez Skincare.
Meyer-Whalley keeps a low profile on social media. Her Instagram account, @renimwhalley, is private, with just over 1,000 followers.
Going public at the Yankees press conference
Fried and Meyer-Whalley have not spoken publicly about when or how they met. Some reports indicate they have been together since at least 2021. But they confirmed the relationship in July 2024 when they walked the red carpet together during MLB All-Star Game weekend in Arlington, Texas. The couple was photographed holding hands and laughing during the event’s portrait session.
Their most visible moment came months later at Yankee Stadium in December 2024. Meyer-Whalley was part of the family photo on the Yankees podium after Fried signed his deal, and the images circulated widely among Yankees fans online.
“When the Yankees say they’re interested in you, you perk up and you listen,” Fried said at the press conference. “There’s a standard and it’s an extremely storied franchise.”
The couple returned to the All-Star spotlight in July 2025 when they attended the red carpet event in Atlanta, where Fried was selected to represent the Yankees as an All-Star for the third time in his career.

Two athletes on parallel paths
Both Fried and Meyer-Whalley grew up in the Los Angeles area, though it remains unclear whether their paths crossed before adulthood. Fried attended Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City before being drafted by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft. He was eventually traded to the Atlanta Braves and won a World Series ring in 2021 before signing with the Yankees.
Meyer-Whalley, now 29, brings her own athletic pedigree to the relationship. The couple shares a competitive background and a preference for staying out of the public eye, which has only made Yankees fans more curious about them.
With Fried now firmly established as the Yankees ace, especially while Gerrit Cole works his way back from injury, the attention on both his performance and his personal life is only going to grow. If Wednesday’s dominant Yankees Opening Day start was any indication, the 2026 season will keep the Fried name in the headlines for months to come.
