Luis Severino, the starting pitcher for the New York Yankees, hasn’t done well so far in spring training. On Saturday, when the Yankees lost 14-10 to the Tampa Bay Rays, Severino gave up three earned runs in 2.2 innings. In his 2023 spring debut five days earlier, the Detroit Tigers hit Severino for four runs over two innings. However, the pitcher remains positive despite the not-so-good performance so far.

“The results are getting better,” Luis Severino said Saturday. “I gave up four runs last time. I gave up three [today]. So hopefully by the beginning of the season, I’m going down to zero.”

Even though spring training results are not an indication of the real strength of the New York Yankees, Luis Severino’s stats aren’t very good. It seems that the team and Severino care most about the right-hander staying healthy.

A lat strain kept Luis Severino off the field for more than two months at the end of last season. He came back on September 21 and was back in time for the postseason. In 102 innings, Severino went 7-3 and had a 3.18 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.

Because of his injury history, the Yankees barred Luis Severino from competing in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. The 29-year-old had expected to throw for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, which takes place during spring training.

From 2019 to 2021, Luis Severino could only pitch 18 innings during the regular season. He has a career ERA of 3.39, and every nine innings, he strikes out 10 batters on average.
