Luis Gil took the mound against the formidable Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night and, while not at his best, he delivered a solid performance to help the New York Yankees secure a 6-4 victory, salvaging the final game of the series at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees pitcher, who had allowed just four hits in his previous three starts, wasn’t as dominant this time, giving up three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings, marking his shortest outing in over a month. Despite this, Luis Gil’s ability to contain the Dodgers’ top hitters – Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Will Smith – to a mere 1-for-11 impressed both manager Aaron Boone and his teammates.

Aaron Judge highlighted Luis Gil’s effort, noting its significance against one of the league’s best teams and their top players. Judge acknowledged that although the pitcher exited the game with the Dodgers leading, his aggressive approach and resilience against a tough lineup demonstrated his value in high-pressure situations.

“That’s one of the best teams in the league,’’ the Yankees captain said about Luis Gil’s outing. “He showed up big-time. I know he gave up three runs and left with them having the lead, but what he showed against that lineup and their top guys, attacking those guys, that’s who you want on the mound in a situation like that.”

Luis Gil stock stays high despite challenges in Dodgers matchup

Luis Gil described the game as a battle but found it enjoyable. Coming off an impressive stretch where he had allowed only three earned runs and 15 hits over 44 2/3 innings in his previous seven starts, the pitcher allowed just one hit in his first four innings on Sunday, a leadoff double by Teoscar Hernández in the second, but managed to strand the runner.

“It felt like a real combat,” he told after the game. “But, also, quite enjoyable.”

Luis Gil’s impressive streak on the mound faced a challenge on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The young right-hander allowed three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings, marking his shortest start in over a month. Despite the uneven performance, he showcased resilience in a tough matchup against the storied Dodgers.

In the fifth inning, Luis Gil encountered trouble, allowing a one-out double to Andy Pages followed by a single from Gavin Lux, which advanced Pages to third. Lux then stole second, and although the Yankees rookie struck out Kiké Hernández, Mookie Betts hit a two-run double to left, tying the game at 2-2. Manager Aaron Boone noted that Luis Gil seemed to tire late in the outing, leading to a go-ahead solo homer by Teoscar Hernández, which ended his night in the sixth.

The three runs allowed were the most Luis Gil had given up since surrendering five at Milwaukee on April 26. However, Trent Grisham, filling in for the injured Juan Soto, helped bail out Gil with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth off Tyler Glasnow, putting the Yankees back in the lead.

Despite the mixed results, Gil’s ERA remains an impressive 2.04, and the Yankees have won 11 of his 13 starts this season. Aaron Judge, who has observed Gil’s development, expressed confidence in the pitcher’s ability to perform under pressure, noting his anticipation of more strong outings in the future.

Luis Gil’s handling of the Dodgers’ top hitters was particularly commendable, limiting them to just one hit and demonstrating his potential to compete against the league’s best. As the Yankees aim for continued success, Luis Gil’s growth and contributions on the mound will be essential. Sunday night’s performance, while not flawless, highlighted his resilience and capacity to keep his team competitive.
