The New York Yankees‘ latest offseason move—a minor league deal with former Mets top prospect Dominic Smith—has stirred mixed reactions among fans. While many are still lamenting the team’s inability to land marquee free agents like Juan Soto and Roki Sasaki, one person is notably excited: Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Jazz Chisholm welcomes Yankees’ signing of Dominic Smith

Jazz Chisholm, the Yankees’ third baseman, took to social media to share his enthusiasm for the signing. In a video posted to his Instagram stories, Chisholm showcased Smith, smiling alongside him during a workout session. The clip, later reposted by SNY on X.com, highlights the camaraderie between the two players.

Chisholm has previously referred to Smith as a “big brother” and credited the veteran first baseman with mentoring him early in his career. The relationship dates back to Chisholm’s formative years, with Smith offering guidance that left a lasting impression.

Smith, a former first-round pick in 2013, has had an uneven career. Across six seasons with the Mets, he posted a .246/.308/.424 slash line and hit 46 home runs over 447 games, yielding a .733 OPS. After being displaced at first base by Pete Alonso, Smith spent time in the outfield before moving on to stints with the Reds and Red Sox. Last season, he played in 93 major league games, finishing with a .691 OPS.

Primarily a first baseman, Smith is still regarded as a solid defender at the position, though his bat never developed the power once expected of him. Now, the Yankees see him as an affordable insurance option for their aging first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. However, Smith faces an uphill battle to make the major league roster. With lefty-hitting Ben Rice already on the roster and versatile players like DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera capable of covering first base, Smith’s chances of breaking camp with the team are slim.

For Chisholm, though, Smith’s presence is about more than roster competition. As the two prepare to report to spring training in Tampa, Chisholm will have a familiar face to help ease his transition. Acquired from the Marlins at last season’s trade deadline, this will mark Chisholm’s first Yankees spring training.

While Smith may not excite a fan base yearning for star power, his addition underscores the importance of chemistry and mentorship within a team. As Chisholm continues to integrate into the Yankees’ clubhouse, having a trusted ally like Smith could prove invaluable.
