There is some early hope within the Yankees organization regarding the return of rookie sensation Jasson Dominguez, possibly around Memorial Day next season. However, the team won’t have a definitive timeline until after Dominguez undergoes surgery.
As of Wednesday evening, Jasson Dominguez was still in the process of seeking and evaluating medical opinions regarding the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The Yankees had not yet made an official announcement regarding his surgery.
Jasson Dominguez’s return hinges on surgery
While one Yankees source expressed optimism about a Memorial Day return, another cautioned that it was premature to determine the timeline because the nature of Jasson Dominguez’s surgery will dictate it.
Jasson Dominguez’s options include Tommy John surgery, which typically requires a 9-10 month recovery period for a position player, and an internal bracing procedure, considered less invasive. But Boston shortstop Trevor Story underwent the internal brace procedure and returned after seven months.
If Jasson Dominguez opts for the internal brace, he could potentially return to the field in the mid-to-late May timeframe. However, choosing Tommy John surgery would likely result in him missing at least the first half of the upcoming season.
One source explained that in many cases, it is necessary to try using a brace to determine if it would be effective.
The quickest return
A similar situation occurred with Phillies standout Bryce Harper, whose surgery took place last November without the surgeon initially determining whether it would be an internal brace procedure or a Tommy John surgery. During the operation, it was determined that Harper required Tommy John surgery.
Harper made an unusually quick return in just 160 days, but it’s important to note that his case may not serve as a reliable benchmark for Jasson Dominguez. Harper has primarily played as a first baseman and designated hitter this season.
Looking ahead, the Yankees have Anthony Rizzo under contract for the upcoming season and multiple options for the designated hitter role, including Giancarlo Stanton. Therefore, the team is likely to prioritize Dominguez’s readiness to play in the outfield.
Jasson Dominguez possesses a versatile skill set that suits center and left field positions, where a strong throwing arm is not as critical as it is in right field.
