Luis Gil could play a pivotal role in the New York Yankees‘ attempt to solve their bullpen struggles as they enter a critical phase of the season. The right-hander is set to start against the Chicago Cubs on Friday, but his role might not end there. As the Yankees search for answers, Gil’s versatility could make him an essential piece in the bullpen, where the team has struggled to find consistency.

Luis Gil could be key to Yankees’ bullpen fix

The decision to start Luis Gil this Friday was made before the Yankees’ latest loss to the Texas Rangers, a game that underscored the team’s urgent need for a reliable bullpen. Closer Clay Holmes blew his MLB-leading 11th save in that game, deepening the crisis. With the trade and waiver claim deadlines now past, the Yankees are left with no option but to explore internal fixes to bolster their chances of staying in playoff contention.

Luis Gil, who is returning from a lower back strain, is currently slated to rejoin the rotation. However, many believe he could be more effective as a reliever. MLB insider Joel Sherman, speaking on MLB Network, argued that the Yankees should consider transitioning Gil into the bullpen.

“I would put Gil in the back of the game and see what it looks like. The Yankees need somebody who can blow away some people,” Sherman said.

At 26, Luis Gil brings a unique combination of velocity and variety to the mound. His fastball reaches the upper 90s, and his changeup averages 91.7 mph, while his slider sits in the upper 80s. This arsenal makes him a potential late-inning weapon. However, there are concerns about his command; Gil averages 4.8 walks per nine innings, a statistic that could prove problematic in high-leverage situations.

Still, the Yankees are short on options. Their bullpen has been one of the team’s weakest links this season, and they need a fresh approach to address the problem. “This bullpen at the end is not good enough,” Sherman added. “I would try something drastic.”

Shifting Luis Gil to a relief role could offer the Yankees a dual benefit. Firstly, it might stabilize a bullpen that has been prone to faltering in key moments. Secondly, it could allow other starters to settle into more defined roles, providing clarity and consistency to a rotation that has also struggled with injuries and performance issues.

Another potential advantage of moving Luis Gil to the bullpen is his ability to deliver multiple innings. Unlike some relievers who are limited to a single inning, Gil could provide the Yankees with flexibility, potentially bridging the gap between the starter and the back end of the bullpen.

The Yankees, now in a critical stretch, have little time to waste. With the postseason on the line, they must find a way to fix their bullpen. Luis Gil might be the key to that solution. The team’s decision in the coming days will likely have a significant impact on their postseason prospects.

Whether Luis Gil remains in the rotation or moves to the bullpen, one thing is clear: his performance could be crucial to the Yankees’ hopes of making a deep run in October.
