The Yankees placed Jose Trevino on the disabled list on Thursday with what they consider to be a slight strain of his left hamstring and recalled Ben Rortvedt from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take his place. The Yankees have lost another player to a soft-tissue injury, but the team can now turn to the catcher who typically sits on the sidelines due to injuries.
Jose Trevino left the batter’s box early in Wednesday’s game with a hamstring injury, but he stayed in the game until being pinch-run for in the 10th inning of a 3-0 loss, according to manager Aaron Boone.
Boone expressed his desire for the issue to be resolved internally, stating, “We just want it to be something we knock out here.” He acknowledged the team’s upcoming off day on Monday, noting that the player in question would have had a day off today as well. Boone mentioned that, in the best-case scenario, Jose Trevin would have participated in a few games over the next five days. However, he also mentioned that the player is dealing with other physical ailments, and he hopes that this time off, primarily for the hamstring issue, will provide his entire body with some much-needed rest.
Boone did not know if Jose Trevino would be sent for an MRI, but the catcher had just been seen at the Rogers Centre on Thursday.
Jose Trevin, the third Yankee to suffer a hamstring issue after Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson, is eligible to come off the disabled list on May 28.
For the time being, the Yankees will rely on Rortvedt and Kyle Higashioka at catcher. Higashioka started Thursday’s game against the Blue Jays. Rortvedt might make his Yankees debut this weekend catching either Jhony Brito or Luis Severino.
Jose Trevino’s career this season
Prior to joining the Yankees in 2022, Jose Trevino, aged 30, had spent the 2018-2021 seasons as a catcher for the Rangers, primarily in a part-time capacity. During his tenure with the Rangers, he had established himself as a defense-oriented catcher, evidenced by his eight Defensive Runs Saved in 2021. However, Jose Trevino’s defensive prowess reached new heights during his first season with the Yankees, as he accumulated an impressive 21 Defensive Runs Saved, earning him a Gold Glove and a Fielding Bible award. Offensively, Jose Trevino contributed 11 home runs and recorded a slash line of .248/.283/.388, resulting in weighted runs created plus (wRC+) of 91.
However, this season Jose Trevino has struggled to maintain his previous level of performance. Currently, he holds a batting average of just .219, with an on-base percentage of .265 and a slugging percentage of .333. Defensively, his contributions have been around the league average. This decline in production is frustrating for the Yankees, who have been plagued by a persistent issue of injuries.
Jose Trevino joins a long list of players, including Josh Donaldson, Oswald Peraza, Giancarlo Stanton, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, Frankie Montas, Luis Gil, Scott Effross, Ian Hamilton, Tommy Kahnle, Jonathan Loáisiga, and Lou Trivino, who are currently on the injured list. Additionally, Aaron Judge and Harrison Bader have also missed playing time. Despite these absences, the team has managed to maintain a respectable 25-20 record. However, the constant roster changes and injuries could become a growing concern over the course of a long season unless the team’s overall health situation improves.
