Injuries strike: Yankees’ offense takes a hit in 2023

In a surprising twist, the New York Yankees‘ 2023 offensive struggles may be traced back to two freak injuries. The collision between Anthony Rizzo’s head and Fernando Tatis Jr.’s hip, as well as Aaron Judge’s right foot hitting an exposed cement base, impacted the team’s performance significantly. Prior to these injuries, the Yankees were on a promising trajectory with solid stats and a playoff spot.

Unfortunately, Rizzo’s concussion and Judge’s lengthy absence resulted in a decline in offensive performance. The Yankees’ inadequacies in their lineup were exposed during this period, leading to a significant drop in their standings. While the injuries undoubtedly affected the team, they only tell part of the story.

The Yankees’ recurring failures in the ALCS against the Houston Astros over the years indicate a failure to adapt and learn from their mistakes. The Astros’ success cannot solely be attributed to their cheating scandal in 2017, as they have continued to perform well despite facing significant pitching injuries and lengthy IL stints for key players. Houston has consistently outperformed the Yankees in critical moments.

The Yankees’ roster-building philosophy has been heavily skewed towards right-handed power hitters, emphasizing the “big, hairy monster” approach. While this worked when the league heavily favored home runs, the game has evolved, and the Yankees’ over-reliance on right-handed batters has made them susceptible to right-handed power pitching during the playoffs.

The team’s approach to hitting also lacked adaptability, with players seemingly adhering to a predetermined theory rather than responding to the game’s dynamic situations. This approach has resulted in poor performances in the playoffs, where a more well-rounded and adaptable lineup is needed.

The Yankees’ front office must recognize these flaws and focus on building a more balanced and versatile lineup that can adapt to various situations. The recent hiring of a new hitting coach who emphasizes a more all-field approach is a step in the right direction.

In conclusion, while injuries did impact the Yankees’ 2023 season, their ongoing decline can be attributed to a lack of adaptability and a roster-building philosophy that emphasizes power hitting at the expense of other important aspects of the game. The team must learn from their mistakes and make necessary changes to regain their competitive edge.
