This season might have unfolded differently had Giancarlo Stanton, one of the game’s foremost power hitters, enjoyed a standout year. However, his performance has taken a sharp nosedive, contributing to the Yankees’ struggles.

A hamstring injury sidelined him for over six weeks earlier in the season, and even when Giancarlo Stanton has been in the lineup, the Yankees have missed his offensive production.

Following his 0-for-4 performance on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, Giancarlo Stanton’s OPS has dropped to .702, which would be the lowest of his career, and it’s still decreasing. The former MVP has only managed five hits in September, with his batting average at .190.

Giancarlo Stanton had difficulty finding success against Yusei Kikuchi and the Blue Jays’ bullpen, regardless of whether he tried taking pitches or swinging. In his first at-bat, he watched three strikes go by. In his next turn, he weakly swung at a curveball in the dirt, resulting in a strikeout.

In the sixth inning, with two runners on base and only one out, Giancarlo Stanton hit a slow-moving ground ball into the shortstop hole off a Yimi Garcia slider, leading to a double play that ended the inning. He, mindful of avoiding muscle injuries that have already impacted his season, is cautious when running the bases.

The Yankees consistently faced setbacks due to his sluggish legs. During Giancarlo Stanton’s final at-bat, he contributed to a game-ending double play. Is this now the inescapable truth for the 33-year-old with leaden feet?

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged that it had been a challenging season for Giancarlo Stanton. He mentioned that the slugger had struggled to find a prolonged hot streak, unlike the kind where he typically performed exceptionally for a month at a time.

The Yankees skipper commented on Giancarlo Stanton’s future with the team, stating that they would assess the situation and work on preparing him for the upcoming offseason and spring training to ensure the best possible outcome.

Giancarlo Stanton exemplified the Yankees’ problems, but these issues extended beyond the towering 6-foot-6 slugger.

Yankees playoff hopes akin to Giancarlo Stanton’s base running

The slim playoff hopes the Yankees clung to likely vanished on Tuesday, fading even faster than Giancarlo Stanton’s diminished running speed.

The Yankees, who had been on a recent hot streak, suffered a setback that might have extinguished any remaining hope of a miraculous climb up the wild-card standings. The setback was epitomized by Giancarlo Stanton’s struggles, as he endured a challenging season and contributed to six outs in four at-bats, including two strikeouts and two double plays in the Yankees’ 7-1 loss to the Blue Jays.

With only 11 games left to play, the Yankees (76-75) now find themselves seven games behind the Mariners and Rangers, both of whom won on Tuesday, in the race for the final wild-card spot. Even if the Yankees were to win all their remaining games, they might still miss the playoffs.

Losing pitcher Clarke Schmidt assessed the season, expressing the sentiment that they believed they fell short in terms of execution. He noted that they didn’t achieve what they had set out to do during the season, whether it was in pitching or at the plate.

The Yankees managed to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of Gleyber Torres‘ double that brought Aaron Judge home, but failed to add to their tally thereafter. The Yankees ended the game with a mere six hits.

Schmidt’s performance fell short of perfection, as he allowed four runs in five innings. It began with a home run from George Springer and included a two-run shot from Bo Bichette in the fifth inning, which marred Schmidt’s night.

The Yankees’ bullpen held the Blue Jays in check until the ninth inning, when Alejandro Kirk blasted a two-run homer off Zach McAllister, and an error by Anthony Volpe allowed another run to score.

In the fourth inning, Toronto (84-67) seized the lead, capitalizing on a throwing error by third baseman Oswald Peraza, which put runners on the corners with no outs. Cavan Biggio followed with an RBI single, extending their advantage.

The Yankees’ bullpen managed to hold off the Blue Jays until the ninth inning, where Alejandro Kirk hammered a two-run shot off Zach McAllister, and an error by Anthony Volpe allowed another run to cross the plate.

The loss was just the Yankees’ seventh in their last 21 games, but the team’s performance from April through August left little margin for error in September. Following a three-game winning streak, the Yankees have now dropped two consecutive games, likely diminishing their chances of making a playoff appearance, even though it’s a tough reality to accept.
