New York Yankees fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Jon Heyman, a reporter for the New York Post, brings encouraging news about the team’s star pitcher, Gerrit Cole. Despite being out of action since spring training due to elbow discomfort, the Yankees ace is on track to make his much-anticipated return to the mound in mid-June.

Heyman reports that Gerrit Cole eyeing mid-June return to Yankees rotation and is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session this coming Saturday, marking a significant step in his recovery process and paving the way for his potential comeback next month.

Hours later, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed the news, stating that ace Gerrit Cole is anticipated to resume throwing off the mound on Saturday as part of his recovery process, as reported by Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

While Gerrit Cole eyeing mid-June return to Yankees rotation, first bullpen session tomorrow’s absence has undoubtedly left a void in the Yankees’ pitching rotation, his return will provide a significant boost to the team. His exceptional performance last season, which earned him the prestigious Cy Young Award, serves as a testament to his prowess on the mound.

In the 2023 season, Gerrit Cole recorded an impressive 222 strikeouts, posted a stellar 2.63 ERA, and led the league with a 0.98 WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched). Despite these remarkable achievements, the Yankees still managed to secure a commendable 15-4 record in games started by the ace pitcher.

Although missing a portion of the season is far from ideal, the silver lining is that Gerrit Cole likely dodged the need for major surgery. This means he should be able to rejoin the team well before the season concludes, giving him ample time to regain his form and contribute to the Yankees’ crucial playoff push.

Even in his absence, the Yankees have continued to perform well, currently holding a solid 20-13 record and trailing the Baltimore Orioles by just one game in the AL East standings.

The disappointment of last year’s 82-80 record and failure to secure a playoff berth still lingers in the minds of Yankees fans. However, with the team’s strong start to the current season and the anticipated return of their ace pitcher, the Yankees appear poised to reclaim their position as a formidable force in the league.

Yankees await LeMahieu’s return

It has been a week since the New York Yankees’ three-time All-Star infielder, DJ LeMahieu, experienced a setback due to a non-displaced fracture in his foot. This persistent injury has kept him out of action for the entirety of the season up to this point.

LeMahieu’s absence is a significant loss for the Yankees’ lineup. He established himself as a vital offensive force in 2020, leading the league with an impressive .364 batting average. However, injuries have been a constant challenge throughout his career. Although he appeared in 136 games in 2023, his performance declined, as evidenced by his batting line of .243/.327/.390 with 15 home runs.

Despite the setback, there is reason for optimism. Manager Aaron Boone provided an encouraging update, revealing that LeMahieu reported feeling “great” prior to Wednesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. Boone also alluded to a potential timeline for LeMahieu’s return, indicating that he may be ready to begin baseball activities in the near future, as reported by Greg Joyce of the New York Post.

LeMahieu’s versatility in playing various infield positions is a valuable asset for the team, particularly considering the recent wave of injuries affecting the roster. Jon Berti, another versatile infielder, is also currently out of action due to a left groin strain.

While LeMahieu’s return seems to be on the horizon, it is likely still several weeks away. He will need to gradually progress through baseball activities, including a stint in the minor leagues for rehabilitation, before rejoining the major league team. Given his prolonged absence from competitive play, the precise timeline for him to regain his peak form remains uncertain.

As the Yankees head into Thursday afternoon’s matchup against the Orioles, they find themselves tied for first place in the American League East. Their goal is to secure a victory in Game 4 of the series and level the score in Baltimore. With the expected return of several key players, including LeMahieu, over the next two months, the Yankees are hopeful that they can further strengthen their already impressive roster and solidify their position as strong contenders in the league.
