While Gerrit Cole’s poor performance against the Mets raised concerns among some journalists, Yankees fans have shown their support. However, others noted that in his last game, Cole allowed four earned runs, marking the lowest start of his career.

Gerrit Cole has to be THAT DUDE tomorrow. There's no other way

Many fans expressed a desire to see him back on the field, not only because Gerrit Cole a great player but also because the team hasn’t performed well this week, winning just one of five games.

Were the Yankees better without Gerrit Cole? Really makes you think.

Gerrit Cole please save the season tomorrow 🙏 pic.twitter.com/NLZhFPMZOD

It's very clear this is the issue & if Gerrit Cole isn't going to be right this season the Yankees will not get where they want to go this season! 🤷🏼‍♀️

— Amy Murray (@VTDukefan) June 29, 2024

This upcoming game is crucial, as the Yankees have slipped from the top of the American League standings and now hold a 53-32 record.

Gerrit Cole’s bullpen session impresses

According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, Gerrit Cole threw a bullpen session on Saturday, with his fastball reaching the low 90s.

Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake mentioned that Gerrit Cole is “one notch ahead of your typical spring training progression,”. This suggests Cole might face live hitters sooner than expected, which was later confirmed by YES Network

Up next

Looking ahead, Gerrit Cole will make his third appearance of the year in Sunday’s series finale, scheduled for 12:07 p.m. Eastern, as he aims to rebound from recent command issues against the Mets.
