The Los Angeles Angels have made a significant managerial decision, and it has ramifications that touch upon the storied history of baseball. On Monday, the Angels officially announced that Phil Nevin, the former New York Yankees coach, will not be returning as their manager for the 2024 season. This development marks the end of Nevin’s tenure with the Angels, a journey that began in 2022 when he assumed the role of third base coach. His managerial ascent was propelled by unfortunate circumstances: he took over as interim manager after the dismissal of Joe Maddon in June, eventually transitioning into the full-time manager for the 2023 campaign.

The Los Angeles Angels fired former New York Yankees coach Phil Nevin interim manager.

Nevin’s managerial journey, however, was a mixed bag. Over the course of 268 games at the helm, the Angels posted a record of 119 wins and 149 losses, resulting in a win percentage of .444. While Nevin undoubtedly brought his expertise to the role, the team’s performance during his tenure fell short of expectations.

A Yankees connection

Phil Nevin as coach of the Yankees

Prior to his time with the Angels, Phil Nevin had a notable four-year stint as the Yankees’ third base coach. However, in 2021, the Yankees made the decision not to renew his contract for the 2022 season, marking the end of his tenure in the Bronx. Despite parting ways with the organization, Nevin expressed deep appreciation for the support he received from those within the Yankees community. Emotions ran high during that period, as he reflected on his time in pinstripes.

Nevin’s association with the Yankees began in 2018 when he joined the coaching staff under the leadership of his close friend, manager Aaron Boone. Throughout his tenure, he served as the club’s third base coach, and he looked back on his time in the role with no regrets. It was a chapter in his career filled with camaraderie and a shared passion for the game of baseball.

Notably, Phil Nevin’s own playing career spanned 12 seasons in the Major Leagues, during which he wore the jerseys of seven different organizations. His impressive slash line of .270/.343/.472 attests to his skill and contribution to the game. The pinnacle of his playing career came in 2001 when he earned his first and only All-Star selection. That memorable season saw Nevin garner MVP consideration, driven by his remarkable .306 batting average and a formidable .976 OPS.

Baseball excellence seems to run in the Nevin family, as Phil’s son, Tyler Nevin, recently wrapped up his third big league season. Tyler, who plays for the Detroit Tigers, contributed in 41 games and displayed a batting line of .200/.306/.316, showing that the Nevin legacy endures on the diamond.

As Phil Nevin faces this turning point in his career, the question remains whether he will continue his coaching journey. If he chooses to do so, it is almost certain that he will find a new home within another baseball organization. His wealth of experience and dedication to the sport make him an attractive prospect for any team looking to strengthen its coaching staff. Whatever path he chooses, the baseball world will undoubtedly keep an eye on Phil Nevin’s future endeavors.
