A former Yankees outfielder, Alex Verdugo, could be a fit for the Kansas City Royals, according to SI.com.
After signing right-hander Carlos Estevez to a two-year, $22 million deal, the Royals appear to have solidified their pitching staff for 2025. They had already added Michael Lorenzen earlier in January and brought back Michael Wacha, giving them a more complete rotation.
Now, the focus shifts to the lineup. While the additions of Jonathan India and Joey Wiemer help, Kansas City still lacks a proven bat to round out its offense. Alex Verdugo, who spent 2024 with the Yankees, could be an option to fill that void.
Alex Verdugo: A Potential fit for the Royals?

ESPN’s David Schoenfield recently pointed to former Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo as a potential target for teams needing outfield help, listing the Royals among the possible landing spots.
“The thin list of free-agent outfielders has been picked through, leaving a group of fourth-outfielder types to choose from,” Schoenfield wrote.
“For any team looking for a full-time left fielder, Verdugo might be the guy to roll the dice on, even coming off a terrible offensive season with the Yankees in which he hit .233/.291/.356. However, he’s still just 29, plays a good enough left field and puts the ball in play.”
Verdugo’s lone season in New York was disappointing, as he struggled to replicate his previous production and ended the year as the final out of the World Series. The Yankees acquired him in a trade with the Boston Red Sox before the 2024 season, hoping he could bring consistency to their outfield. Instead, he posted career lows in several offensive categories.
Could a Change of Scenery Help Verdugo?
Despite his struggles in 2024, Verdugo isn’t far removed from being a solid contributor. In 2023 with Boston, he slashed .264/.324/.421 with 13 home runs and 54 RBI, proving he can be a reliable bat when at his best. He also brings above-average defense in left field, an area where the Royals could use reinforcement.
At 29, Verdugo still has time to rebound, and Kansas City’s hitter-friendly Kauffman Stadium could provide a fresh start. If the Royals are looking for an affordable outfield option with upside, he might be worth considering.
