Former Yankees fan favorite Matt Carpenter might not be done with baseball just yet. The veteran slugger, who captured the hearts of Yankees fans during his brief but electric stint in 2022, is open to playing for a 15th season. After serving in a part-time role with the St. Louis Cardinals this year, Carpenter hinted that he’s considering another go-around in the majors.
Carpenter open to playing again after strong 2024 season
“I’m certainly open to playing,” Carpenter told The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “I like this role. I think, considering the role, I’ve done well in it, and I also think, more importantly, I understand the bigger picture of it. I’d be open to doing it again.”
For Yankees fans, Matt Carpenter’s short tenure in pinstripes was unforgettable. Joining the team mid-season in 2022, Carpenter instantly became a key contributor, posting a remarkable .305 average and a jaw-dropping 1.138 OPS. His clutch performances and veteran presence made him a fan favorite in the Bronx, and many still remember his hot streak fondly as one of the bright spots of that season.
Carpenter’s success with the Yankees landed him a two-year, $6 million deal with the San Diego Padres. However, after a stint in San Diego and a brief trade to the Atlanta Braves, he was released before the 2024 season began. Despite these setbacks, Carpenter returned to the Cardinals on a one-year deal and quietly put together a solid campaign, hitting .317 with a .695 OPS in 146 plate appearances.
While his time with the Yankees was short, it left a lasting impression. Carpenter’s leadership and ability to rise to the occasion endeared him to Yankees fans, and his potential return to the majors could spark interest among teams in need of a reliable, veteran bat.
Could a reunion with the Yankees be in the cards? It’s unclear where Carpenter will end up, but his willingness to continue playing leaves the door open for another chapter. Yankees fans, who saw firsthand what Carpenter can bring to the table, might just hope that chapter brings him back to the Bronx.
