Former New York Yankees outfielder Raul Mondesi has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison, along with a fine of 30 million pesos (approximately $500,000), according to the Spanish-speaking outlet Listin Diario.
The San Cristóbal Collegiate Court handed down the sentence on Friday, following Mondesi’s conviction for embezzlement during his tenure as mayor of San Cristóbal from 2010 to 2016. This decision came after an agreement was reached between the prosecutor’s office and the defense, stipulating that Mondesi would serve his sentence after completing six years of house arrest. He was originally sentenced for corruption and mishandling public funds in 2017.
In addition to Mondesi, former general secretary of the mayor’s office Bienvenido Araujo Japa, former treasurer Jesús Antonio Ferreira, and former comptroller Pedro Cordero were also sentenced for their involvement in the corruption case.
Mondesi in MLB
Mondesi’s MLB career began with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he won the National League Rookie of the Year award unanimously in 1994. A two-time Gold Glove winner, Mondesi also played for the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Angels, and Atlanta Braves. He was named to the All-Star team in 1995 and finished his baseball career with a .273 batting average, 271 home runs, and 860 RBIs. Mondesi last played in the majors in 2005 with the Braves, transitioning to a political career soon after.
Mondesi was elected mayor of his hometown, San Cristóbal, on May 10, 2010. His post-baseball career has been marred by legal troubles, culminating in this recent sentencing for corruption-related charges.
