Ex-Chiefs receiver and Yankees fan Gehrig Dieter jokes with Patrick Mahomes at ALDS Game

Patrick Mahomes may be the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, but on October 9, he found himself in the middle of some playful rivalry with a die-hard Yankees fan during Game 3 of the ALDS between the Kansas City Royals and the Yankees. While Mahomes holds a 1% stake in the Royals, his former teammate, Gehrig Dieter, was firmly supporting the Bronx Bombers, proudly sporting a Yankees jersey.

As the Royals tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning, Mahomes, 29, couldn’t resist taking a friendly jab at Dieter. The Chiefs star was seen playfully bumping into his former teammate, giving him a lighthearted earful about the game’s action. Dieter, who’s a lifelong Yankees fan, took the banter in stride, smiling before pretending to throw a punch at Mahomes in response.

Dieter, 31, wasn’t just casually rooting for the Yankees—his connection to the team runs deep. Named after Yankees legend Lou Gehrig, Dieter’s family has a rich baseball legacy, with his brothers named after MLB greats Nolan Ryan and Thurman Munson. Though he spent five seasons with the Chiefs, mainly on the practice squad, and earned a Super Bowl ring in 2020, his heart has always belonged to the Yankees.

Despite Mahomes’ best efforts to razz his former teammate, the Yankees had the final say, winning the game 3-2 and taking a 2-1 lead in the series. Dieter, who had the last laugh, remained proud of his team, showing his unwavering loyalty to the Bronx Bombers even while living in Kansas City.

Mahomes’ connection to baseball goes beyond his ownership stake in the Royals. His father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., was a Major League Baseball pitcher, and young Patrick grew up immersed in the sport. Even though Mahomes is best known for his football achievements, he’s often seen supporting other teams, including the Royals and the Dallas Mavericks, with his signature enthusiasm.

The Rivalry Continues

Yankees fans can appreciate the friendly rivalry that unfolded between Mahomes and Dieter, especially as the Yankees secured a key win. Mahomes, alongside his wife Brittany, who was also spotted enjoying the game, kept the energy high in the stands, even as the Royals fell short.

Dieter, who retired from the NFL after his time with the Chiefs, continues to show his devotion to the Yankees, proving that no matter where his career took him, his love for the Bronx Bombers remains strong.

As the ALDS continues, Yankees fans are surely hoping for more big moments from their team, while Mahomes might just have to wait a little longer for a Royals victory.
