Shohei Ohtani continues redefining baseball’s boundaries. His extraordinary talents have now prompted one ESPN Radio personality to stake his dignity on what seems impossible.

This came just two days before Ohtani slammed two homers, helping the Dodgers overcome the early lead of the Yankees.

Former NFL player and ESPN Los Angeles radio host D’Marco Farr created a stir this week with a shocking wager: if Ohtani ever hits for the cycle while pitching in the same game, Farr will arrive at work completely nude.

The bold declaration emerged during a spirited discussion on ESPN LA 710’s morning program featuring co-hosts Clinton Yates and Farr. The duo debated Ohtani’s next potential milestone in his record-breaking career. “A pitcher has never hit for the cycle in Major League Baseball,” Yates stated. “And I think Shohei Ohtani will be the first one that does it.”

Farr responded with immediate skepticism: “To pitch and hit for the cycle? That’s impossible. Stop the game.” He then escalated dramatically. “I will come in here naked if that ever happens.”

The achievement nobody has accomplished — until now?

Though spoken in jest, the scenario isn’t entirely unrealistic anymore. Ohtani currently functions as both pitcher and designated hitter under a rule modification created specifically for his unique abilities. The “Ohtani rule” implemented in 2022 has allowed him to start numerous games while batting in premium lineup spots.

His skill set makes the feat conceivable.

Ohtani rewrote baseball history in 2024 by becoming the sport’s first 50-home run, 50-stolen base player — an achievement unmatched across more than 100 years of professional baseball. That season included seven triples, demonstrating remarkable speed typically absent from power hitters and pitchers alike.

Through May 2025, Ohtani boasts 20 homers and four triples while posting an OPS exceeding 1.100. His combination of speed, power, and versatility transforms the pitching-cycle combination from an impossible dream to a potential reality.

“He’s one of the best baserunners on the team,” Yates observed. “He hits a lot of triples. This is in play, dog.”

Significance beyond baseball statistics

This viral conversation transcends mere wagering—it reflects a widespread belief in Ohtani’s boundless capabilities. Baseball enthusiasts regularly witness impressive statistics, but the Japanese phenomenon consistently destroys conventional limitations.

Hitting for the cycle requires collecting a single, double, triple, and home run within one game. Few MLB players have ever achieved this rare feat. None accomplished it while simultaneously dominating opposing batters from the pitcher’s mound. Most consider it fantasy territory. For Ohtani, it represents another inevitable milestone.

This season, the two-time MVP leads baseball in home runs, total bases, and extra-base hits while ranking among the top five starters when healthy. Current pitching restrictions stem from careful arm management, but his organization could eventually deploy full two-way capabilities once medical clearance allows consistent dual roles.

Baseball’s revolutionary and cultural impact

Farr’s playful gamble highlights how Ohtani transforms both gameplay and sports discourse. From national debate shows to specialized baseball coverage, his performances generate storylines blending athletic excellence, amazement, and pure entertainment. Whether launching mammoth home runs or firing 100 mph fastballs, Ohtani embodies both a superstar athlete and a compelling narrative.

Should the unthinkable occur—a cycle on the same evening he dominates hitters from the mound—Ohtani won’t merely add another record to his collection.

He’ll create an extremely awkward situation for D’Marco Farr in a very public broadcasting booth.
