A contentious incident unfolded at Yankee Stadium’s right-field wall in Game 4 of the World Series when two Yankees fans were ejected after attempting to interfere with Mookie Betts’ catch of a Gleyber Torres foul ball in the first inning.
Darren Capobianco shared details with The Athletic, explaining how his brother Austin got involved in the incident, during which Betts reportedly responded with pointed language. Anthony Capobianco, a Connecticut resident, expressed his frustration in a message to the publication, stating he only wanted to watch the rest of the game; however, his eventual viewing location remained unknown after his ejection.
“I just see the ball kind of — I don’t want to say (go) up for grabs, if that makes sense,” he claimed. “And then Mookie was swearing at us. Not good.”
The interference had immediate repercussions for the Yankees, as it led to an automatic out for Torres. Ironically, the ejected fans missed Torres’ comeback moment—a three-run home run in the eighth inning that helped the Yankees secure their first Series win with an 11-4 score.

Betts took a measured approach when discussing the incident, minimizing any physical contact and affirming he felt fine. The eight-time All-Star chose to concentrate on the team’s performance rather than the altercation, signaling his readiness to shift focus to Game 5.
The episode underscored the fervor of World Series baseball in New York, where fans’ intense loyalty can sometimes blur the lines of stadium decorum.
Betts’ confrontation with Yankees fans sparks Bronx outcry

The fan interference that stirred controversy during Game 4 of the World Series has been linked to Austin Capobianco, a 38-year-old Yankees season ticket holder from Connecticut, along with another unidentified fan. The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty reported Capobianco’s identity, noting that when reached for comment, he simply stated his intent had been to watch the game.

The incident unfolded in the bottom of the first inning with the Yankees trailing 2-0. As Gleyber Torres sent a fly ball into foul territory, what appeared to be a routine catch for Mookie Betts in right field turned chaotic when two fans reached for the ball. One reportedly grabbed Betts’ wrist while the other tried to snag the ball, causing it to pop out of his glove.
Televised footage and social media circulated images of the moment, and security soon escorted the fans from Yankee Stadium. An MLB spokesperson confirmed the ejections, a costly outcome for fans who had likely spent close to $1,000 per ticket.

Though officials condemned the interference, the scene drew mixed reactions from Yankees fans. One spectator reportedly praised Capobianco’s actions as a bold display of support, describing it as a spirited attempt to back the team in the championship atmosphere.
“I saw him being walked out,” one fan told The Athletic. “I told him he was my hero for trying to save the Yankees. It’s the championship game.”
