The New York home of the former Yankee great Derek Jeter resembling a castle is going under the hammer. Popularly called Tiedemann Castle, this Orange County property in New York overlooking a lake has been on and off the market for the last few years.

The former shortstop for the Yankees has known the property for a long time. According to the 2011 book “The Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter” by Ian O’Connor, he spent his summers as a child around the castle. William “Sonny” Conners was Derek Jeter’s grandfather. He was adopted by the Tiedemann family, who used to own the estate. The castle was built around 1903 by a dentist from New York City. A fire burned it down before the Tiedemanns fixed it up.

On Greenwood Lake, the strange property is surrounded by a stone wall and has a tower and battlements on the roof that look like they are from the Middle Ages. Paramount says that on the 4-acre property, there is a stone waterfall and a copy of the Statue of Liberty. Paramount said there is a main house that is about 9,000 square feet, a guesthouse by the lake, and a pool house. There is also a bar, an office, and a billiards room on the property.

The castle home of Derek Jeter is less than 50 miles from Manhattan. Records show that Jeter’s limited liability company bought the property in the early 2000s.

Since June 2018, when it was first listed for $14.75 million, it has been on and off the market. According to a marketing email from the company running the auction, Paramount Realty USA, the minimum bid on the property at the auction on December 15 will be just $6.5 million.

Misha Haghani, the owner of Paramount Realty, wouldn’t say who the owner was, but he did say that the seller had done a multimillion-dollar renovation on the property. He said that the seller chose to sell through an auction because it gave them more control over when the sale would happen and could “bring some finality to the process.” He said that the property will only sell if it gets at least the minimum bid price.

Realtor.com data shows that the median listing price for a home in the Greenwood Lake area is only $399,000. This home is an exception.

Wright Bros. Real Estate’s Diane Mitchell, who is the listing agent for the property, will help run the auction. In a statement, Ms. Mitchell said, “This property is truly unique in so many ways, which is why we think it’s best to sell it at a private auction and let the buyer set the price.”

Since he stopped playing baseball in 2014, Derek Jeter has started several businesses. The ex-Yankee great had a share in the deal that purchased the MLB franchise the Miami Marlins for $1.7 billion in 2017. Until recently, he was the team’s CEO but had sold his share of the club. Derek Jeter entered the Hall of Fame this September.
