NEW YORK — Aaron Boone, the manager of the Yankees, was taken aback when he received the news on Friday afternoon during batting practice that he had been handed a suspension as a result of his recent interactions with Major League umpires.

Reflecting on his heated confrontation with home-plate umpire Edwin Moscoso over ball-strike calls, the manager affirmed his commitment to exercising greater caution in the future. But Aaron Boone made it clear that he has no intentions of altering his demeanor within the confines of the Yankees‘ dugout.

Caught off guard and filled with disappointment, Aaron Boone dutifully fulfilled his one-game suspension and settled an undisclosed financial penalty before he returned in Game 2 against the Padres. In game 1, he observed the Yankees’ opening game against the Padres from the comfort of general manager Brian Cashman’s suite at Yankee Stadium.

“I was a little caught off guard, a little surprised, didn’t expect it,” Aaron Boone said.

Aaron Boone signals no change

Aaron Boone affirmed that he does not plan on changing his demeanor, despite being ejected from several games. Although he acknowledges that there have been instances where he believes he shouldn’t have been tossed, he intends to focus on better understanding the boundaries to avoid similar situations in the future.

“No, I’m not going to change. Even though I have been kicked out of a lot of games, a lot of them I make it through, too. Maybe just being better at knowing where that line is.”

Aaron Boone’s expulsion on Thursday marked his fourth ejection of the season, with two occurring within a span of four games. If he continues at this rate, he is set to surpass his previous season’s record of nine ejections, which stands as his highest number of ejections in a single season during his six-year tenure as the Yankees’ manager.

Yankees' manager Aaron Boone is arguing with the umpire after his ejection on My 25, 2023, at Yankee Stadium.

Aaron Boone stressed that each expulsion is different and that he would not be altering his method to manage the team in order to avoid penalties from the league office.

“There seemed to be a bit of a change in direction there,” Boone said about MLB’s action against him. “But I got kicked out a few times in a week. I don’t want that, certainly they don’t want that. Just kind of move on from it.”

Ready to introspect but fighting to go on

Aaron Boone expressed his willingness to introspect whenever incidents like that occur. He acknowledged that he has contemplated the situation but remains uncertain if any adjustments are necessary. He emphasized his ongoing effort to maintain respect toward everyone involved.

“Certainly I’ve thought about it. I don’t know if anything changes. I always try to be respectful of everyone, but again I’m not going to lose my edge or stop fighting for things that I think are important,” Aaron Boone told. “But at the same time, trying to be better and more mindful of toeing that line and the importance of staying in the game.”

Aaron Boone put emphasis on the point that it’s important to question a decision or a chain of events and he never hesitated to raise his voice. He acknowledged that various umpires respond differently to his comments, and he doesn’t want to compromise his assertiveness.

“Again, a couple of these I don’t necessarily think I should’ve been tossed. I’ll be mindful of it and try to stay in games while fighting for what I think is important and keeping an edge when I walk out there.”
