White Sox hold Yankees to 2 hits, but lose
Nestor Cortes pitched a career-high 8 innings as the New York Yankees defeated the Sox 5-1 on Sunday.
New York only had 2 hits, a single in the 2nd inning. Kinner-Falefa, Isiah Joy Gallo hit a two-run homer in the 9th. But it’s more than enough thanks to the astute Cortés (2-1).
He had a no-hitter in 8th place in his prior outing against Texas, given 3 hits, took 7 hits, and struck out none in another brilliant performance. He has given 2 runs or less in each of his 7 starts this season.
Cortés has an AL-low 2.44 ERA in 133 innings since making his debut last season. He has given up 3 runs or less in sixteen consecutive games Luis Severino.
clay homes Finished with a four-hitter to give New York its 18th win in 21 games. Three of the 4 spots in the series were taken by the major league-leading Yankees.
For Chicago, Kopech (0-1) pitched 6 innings of the hit ball. The right-handed batter pitched 5 quick innings, one of which was particularly bad.
After retiring the first two batters, New York decided to give Kopech 3 runs in the 2nd, the majority of which came from 4 walks, a wild pitch, and a single to left by Kinner-Falefa. Aaron Hicks & DJ LeMahieu each went with loaded bases, & Jose Trevino scored on a wild pitch.
In the second, Kopech threw 41 pitches, 17 of which were strikes. In his other 5 innings, he threw 50 pitches for 33 strikes.
Cortés, who decided to retire after 15 consecutive runs, received significant run support from Kopech’s shaky stretch. With a single in the 1st inning, he extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
In the eighth inning, Adam Engel homered to Chicago, and yet Cortés retired the next 2 batters. Yasmani Grandali is a pinch hitter. For the second out, flew to the right warning track.
