His impressive showing came just a week after losing his closer role, but Clay Holmes showcased his value by swiftly retiring two batters and preserving the tie, allowing the Yankees a chance to seal the victory in the bottom of the inning.
The two-time All-Star’s recent struggles have been a point of frustration for fans. Clay Holmes has blown 12 saves in 41 chances this season, with notable stumbles, including a game-ending grand slam to Texas rookie Wyatt Langford on September 3 and a blown lead against Kansas City just a day prior.
After the game, Clay Holmes expressed pride in his performance and praised the bullpen’s collective effort. He emphasized his commitment to helping the team and supporting his fellow pitchers.

Holmes was sharp, retiring Ceddanne Rafaela on a groundout and Jarren Duran on a flyout, both on 0-2 counts, showcasing his effectiveness under pressure.
Manager Aaron Boone expressed his belief in Clay Holmes’ resilience, commending his willingness to embrace tough situations and maintain confidence in his abilities despite recent struggles. Boone highlighted the pitcher’s readiness to confront challenges head-on as a key asset.

“This is a fun place to play. We kind of know what we’re playing for here and it’s an atmosphere that I think that just gets the best out of everybody and obviously you want to come through,” Clay Holmes said. “Winning here is the special.”
