Clay Holmes stepped onto the Yankee Stadium mound in the 10th inning to a mixed reaction, but his quick and flawless six-pitch outing silenced the boos and energized the crowd, setting the stage for the Yankees’ walk-off win.

His impressive showing came just a week after losing his closer role, but Clay Holmes showcased his value by swiftly retiring two batters and preserving the tie, allowing the Yankees a chance to seal the victory in the bottom of the inning.

The two-time All-Star’s recent struggles have been a point of frustration for fans. Clay Holmes has blown 12 saves in 41 chances this season, with notable stumbles, including a game-ending grand slam to Texas rookie Wyatt Langford on September 3 and a blown lead against Kansas City just a day prior.

After the game, Clay Holmes expressed pride in his performance and praised the bullpen’s collective effort. He emphasized his commitment to helping the team and supporting his fellow pitchers.

“I felt good out there,” he told after the Yankees’ victory. “Really big effort by all the guys that pitched today. … Those guys mean a lot to me, and I just want to go out there and continue to pick them up.”

Yankees' Clay Holmes entered with boos but exits with a standing ovation after six pitches in the win over the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on September 12, 2024.

The Yankees redemption of Clay Holmes

Since being removed from the closer role following his 11th blown save, Clay Holmes has shown signs of regaining his form. In three appearances this past week, he has delivered two scoreless outings, including a strong eighth inning in a narrow loss on Sunday and his clutch performance against the Red Sox.

Clay Holmes faced a setback in his previous outing against the Royals, surrendering a lead in the seventh inning, but he rebounded strongly on Thursday with back-to-back appearances. Holmes was sharp, retiring Ceddanne Rafaela on a groundout and Jarren Duran on a flyout, both on 0-2 counts, showcasing his effectiveness under pressure.

Manager Aaron Boone expressed his belief in Clay Holmes’ resilience, commending his willingness to embrace tough situations and maintain confidence in his abilities despite recent struggles. Boone highlighted the pitcher’s readiness to confront challenges head-on as a key asset.

“He wants the ball and is confident, rightfully so, in what he can do out there,” the Yankees skipper said. “Despite some of the things that have gone on or some of the outings that have gotten away, I really like his frame of mind and ability to handle those inevitable ups and downs.”

Clay Holmes’ contribution in the 10th inning capped a solid performance from the Yankees‘ bullpen, which included standout efforts from Ian Hamilton, Tim Hill, and Tommy Kahnle.

Starter Nestor Cortes shared insight into the team’s confidence in Holmes, recalling a conversation with catcher Jose Trevino where they anticipated Holmes would rise to the occasion, no matter the situation. Cortes stressed that the team’s trust in Holmes has been unwavering all season.

Clay Holmes reflected on the unique atmosphere of playing in Yankee Stadium, acknowledging the pressure and thrill that come with the role. He emphasized how the environment often brings out the best in players and expressed gratitude for the excitement of securing wins as a Yankee.

“This is a fun place to play. We kind of know what we’re playing for here and it’s an atmosphere that I think that just gets the best out of everybody and obviously you want to come through,” Clay Holmes said. “Winning here is the special.”

Throughout Clay Holmes’ ups and downs, his teammates have rallied behind him, offering support that has helped him stay focused and bounce back in key moments. This camaraderie has been instrumental in his ability to perform when it matters most.
