Clay Holmes, the Yankees’ dominant closer, could soon hit the open market, casting a cloud of uncertainty over the team’s bullpen situation in the looming offseason. His latest comments have created a buzz around the possibility of him leaving the pinstriped squad amid uncertainty over a contract extension.

In a recent interview, Clay Holmes, known for his understated demeanor, talked about his future plans that added more uncertainty to his Yankees tenure after the 2024 season.

“I’ve got a lot of good relationships here with coaches and players, and I’m just enjoying that and enjoying where I’m at right now,” the Yankees closer told. “When the day comes that I’m no longer a Yankee, we’ll think about where that goes. But this is where I’m at and I’m going to try to help us win as many games as I can.”

Insider feels Clay Holmes may exit Yankees

Clay Holmes, despite not being a household name, has firmly established himself as an indispensable cog in the Yankees’ recent success story. However, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, contract extension talks haven’t even commenced between him and the Yankees. This raises concerns about the closer’s potentially departing via free agency.

Kuty reports that during a recent interview, the Yankees closer appeared less than optimistic when quizzed about an extension. Clay Holmes revealed that the Yankees were yet to initiate any discussions regarding his future contractual status given his impending free agency. While maintaining his focus on the current campaign, he acknowledged the lingering cloud of uncertainty surrounding his future with the club.

“Then the conversation turned to his future,” Kuty said. “Holmes, typically reserved, sounded less enthused. No, the Yankees hadn’t approached him this offseason about a possible contract with free agency looming in the winter. He’s trying his best not to think about it, though, he said he can’t ‘totally ignore’ that it’s coming.”

Despite the lack of talks, Clay Holmes expressed contentment with his current circumstances in New York, highlighting the strong bonds he’s forged within the organization. He underscored his commitment to securing victories and contributing to the team’s success. However, there was a subtle hint of addressing his future elsewhere once his tenure with the Yankees concludes.

Clay Holmes’ ascent to prominence began with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018. In 2021, he was traded to the Yankees, where his stellar performance propelled him to an All-Star selection in 2022. That season, he amassed 20 saves and a stellar 2.54 ERA across 62 appearances. He’s continued his dominance in 2023, racking up 24 saves with a 2.86 ERA in 66 games.

Currently, amid a career-defining season, Clay Holmes enters free agency after this year. Through his first 12 appearances, he remains flawless, having not surrendered a single run and leading the league with a staggering nine saves. Additionally, he’s only issued one walk while striking out 10 batters, further solidifying his value as an elite closer.

While Clay Holmes’ contributions to the Yankees have been undeniable, the lack of contract discussions thus far suggests a potential parting of ways come the offseason. Only time will tell if the Yankees will make a move to retain their star closer, or if Clay Holmes will test the free-agent market.
